32 OZ LIVE GRINDAL WORM STARTER CULTURE

Get a much bigger head start with your Grindal worm colony.

You will receive an approximately 32 oz established starter culture containing live Grindal worms already living and reproducing throughout moist coconut coir.

This larger culture is a great choice for hobbyists who want more established culture material from the start, plan to build multiple colonies, or want to work toward a steady supply of live food for their fish.

Grindal worms are excellent live food for Bettas, Guppies, Killifish, Cichlids, juvenile fish, fry, and many other freshwater fish.

AFTER YOUR CULTURE ARRIVES

Although this is already a larger starter culture, I recommend eventually transferring it into a larger ventilated plastic container if you want the colony to continue expanding.

More surface area gives the worms additional room to spread, reproduce, and makes feeding and harvesting easier.

When preparing NEW coconut coir, I strongly recommend treating it with boiling water first.

Pour boiling water over the coir and allow it to soak. Let it cool COMPLETELY to room temperature before adding any worms.

Drain or squeeze out excess water until the coir feels like a wrung-out sponge - moist but not dripping or flooded.

Never add worms to hot or warm coconut coir.

Once the new coir is completely cool, add your original culture directly into the larger container.

EASY TO MAINTAIN

No aquarium, filter, air stone, heater, or special light is required.

A ventilated plastic container works great.

Keep the culture indoors and away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

I primarily feed my cultures plain raw oats.

Feed a small amount at a time and wait until most of the previous food is gone before feeding again.

Overfeeding can encourage mold.

EASY HARVESTING

A small flat feeding plate can be placed on top of the coconut coir.

Add a small amount of food underneath or around the plate. The worms will gather around it, making harvesting easy.

To harvest:

1. Lift the feeding plate.

2. Rinse the worms into a small cup of clean water.

3. Let the worms settle.

4. Carefully pour away the rinse water.

5. Feed the cleaned worms to your fish.

This helps keep coconut coir and debris out of your aquarium.

BUILD MULTIPLE CULTURES

Once your colony becomes heavily populated, portions of the worms and culture material can be moved into additional prepared containers.

This allows you to build backup colonies and create multiple cultures from one established starter.

Even with a larger starter, avoid harvesting too heavily immediately after delivery. Give the colony time to settle after shipping and continue reproducing.

The 32 oz refers to the approximate volume of the complete culture, including worms and culture medium. It does NOT mean 32 oz of pure worms.

Worm population naturally varies because every container is a living and actively reproducing culture.

All cultures are checked for activity before shipment.
