Founded in 2025, Bettas Realm was born from the love and admiration its founder, Robert D. Rivera, developed for wild betta species.
It began with a simple question: if domestic bettas originated in Southeast Asia, what do bettas look like in the wild?
That curiosity revealed the incredible diversity of the Betta genus and inspired a commitment to responsibly care for and breed both wild and domestic bettas.
At Bettas Realm, we believe selective breeding should balance color, finnage, and appearance with health, quality of life, and genetic diversity.
Excessive inbreeding can reduce genetic diversity and increase the risk of hereditary health problems becoming established within a bloodline. Our breeding approach emphasizes careful selection, accurate recordkeeping, and responsible outcrossing when appropriate.
We believe the beauty of domestic bettas can be preserved and developed without ignoring the long-term health and welfare of the fish.
One hereditary concern we are especially interested in addressing is diamond eye, a condition often seen in heavily scaled dragon and metallic bettas.
As affected fish mature, scale-like tissue may grow over one or both eyes, partially or completely limiting their vision.
Although the genetics behind diamond eye are not yet fully understood, we believe blindness and other serious health problems should not be accepted simply to preserve a particular appearance.
Our goal is to reduce harmful hereditary traits through careful selection, responsible outcrossing, accurate breeding records, and avoiding the breeding of affected fish whenever possible.
Our commitment also extends to wild betta species. We aim to preserve species purity, maintain accurate bloodlines and locality information when available, and support responsible captive breeding.
This is especially important for species facing habitat destruction, environmental pressure, limited natural ranges, or declining wild populations.
