The fishermen in Iquitos, Peru call it Pez Diablo, the devil fish. Up close, Diablito. When the air is wet enough it jumps out of its stream, flops across the mud, and turns up in a puddle a long way from home. We collected these in a narrow, ankle deep stream behind a house outside Iquitos. The owner's grandsons helped, catching them bare handed.
Sticks itself to the glass above the waterline for hours. Tight lid, front row seat.
Care: Not an annual killifish; a top spawner that lays eggs on floating mops. pH 6 to 7, TDS 50 to 150, 72 to 82°F. Adult size 2.5 inches. A 5 gallon tank with a tight fitting lid, because these are exceptional jumpers and will get out through the smallest gap. Eats flake, brine shrimp, bloodworms, and pretty much any other frozen food.
