The pictures above were taken shortly after a Quick Start culture was placed in the container. The worms are already climbing the sides and ready to feed with the swipe of a finger or a Q-Tip. While you are feeding from these mature cultures, you can take a couple spoon-fulls and start a new mother culture per the instructions you get when you purchase your culture. Setup is as simple as preparing a vented container, laying down a half inch or so of cooked oats, and spreading the starter on top.
The four nematode worms we use in the hobby as live food look very
similar to the unaided eye. All four have about the same high nutritional
value, a close second in many respects to newly hatched baby brine shrimp
(BBS). From the viewpoint of the fry, however, there are differences. If you
are hatching really tiny fry like bettas or rainbows, you want walter worms and
vinegar eels. You can start larger fry that are still too small for BBS right
away on banana worms or micro worms. Micro worms are also good for fry growing
out and for smaller/nano fish like neons, juvenile guppies, small rasboras, or
badis.
This package includes six, 6” long, wide barrel, 7 ml pipettes that are graduated
in 1/2 ml increments up the 3ml stem. They are handy for dispensing
medications, transferring fry and eggs (just snip the tip wider with a pair of
scissors), delivering small foods right to the fry that need them without
spreading them all over the tank, and many other applications.
Complete instructions for culturing these worms, and more information about
them, are available on my website: Live Food
