Description

Live Daphnia (200+ ct)

More than 200 Live Daphnia

These are a large species of daphnia, measuring up to 1/8th inch (3mm) as adults, often called Daphnia "magna" in the Trade.
in well aeriated cultures they are tan or brown in color. They will become pink/red in response to low oxygen.
I have been feeding these to my fish for years. They are excellent for inducing spawning in adults and for picky eaters.
the smaller/younger daphnia can be screened out and returned to the culture or used to feed fry.

Culturing:
almost any vessel can be used to culture. Larger water volumes allow for larger cultures. I recommend at least a 1-gallon jar in a sunny window.
one 200+ ct starter culture in a 1g jar should settle in and be ready for weekly harvesting to start in 2-3 weeks.
Daphnia are sensitive to chlorine, heavy metals, and medications/poisons. Otherwise, they are very hardy - able to survive and often thrive in temperature, PH, hardness, and oxygen levels that would be bad for most fish. Therefore, aged fish tank water (without medications) is ideal for them.
They double in number about every two weeks. I feed my cultures greenwater, spirulina, or ground dried peas every two days, or when the water clears from the last feeding.
Once the culture matures harvest about 1/3 weekly, weather needed or not. If the population becomes too dense, females will begin producing haploid resting eggs and the population will decrease.

All livestock has been bred and raised in my fish room. No fresh imports, and none of the "bonus" pests and diseases that come with fresh imports.
