AUCTION:

You receive: 10+ cherry red neocaradina shrimp & 30+ russian red daphnia. Though this auction is listed as a food auction the cherry shrimp are high-quality.they happen to be both good looking and productive. FYI: My goal is to ship young shrimp from the size of cooked rice to young adults, so many will be more peppermint looking than red but color-up nicely with age.

Here is my YouTube video of this culture: Neocaradina Shrimp & Daphnia Tank

Free Item: This auction qualifies for one free plant portion of your choosing, unless youve ordered from me before - then select any. Presently available: salvania mininia, frogbit, or riccia fluitans. Place the plant you select in the notes of your Paypal payment. If you dont select a plant I dont include any...so I hope you read this.

I get a lot of questions about this tank, particularly how I keep daphnia with shrimp. There is nothing special beyond a standard shrimp tank. I take care of my shrimp like typical and the daphnia benefit from that without additional care . Most every shrimp tank I keep, over one dozen, all contain daphnia or moina. In fact, one of my display tanks, a 75 gallon tank that resides in my office, is a shrimp & daphnia high-tech aquarium. The combination of the two in a heavily planted tank is fantastic, and being the daphnia are translucent, if colored LED lights are used at night, they glow in color making for a very cool psychedelic effect as they swim & bounce around.

Russian Red Daphnia: This daphnia is one of the largest. Ive kept this strain for years, have compared it against many other strains, with this being the superior. Generally, I find the larger daphnia easier to keep. These are the size of a dry pea and large enough to graze for their food...making them perfect for a shrimp tank where we encourage a biofilm.

Cherry Shrimp: Most of the shrimp will be peppermint in color as they are young but color-up with age. They are shipped from the size of cooked rice to young adults. Being I ship some of the shrimp on the young side I include a couple extra on top of the 10+2. If going into an aquarium with fish prepare a container to raise a few shrimp separately.

GUARANTEE:

If DOA I send one replacement at no cost. Please don't file a return as that usually adds additional steps for us both - just message me it didnt make it and I will send another without a guilt trip.

FYI: When it comes to ensuring a live delivery the most vulnerable time for a package is while its with your local carrier or sitting in your mailbox. Its safest to meet the mail carrier and take the package from them directly. If placed in your mailbox it will be baked immediately.

FYI: Distance isnt a factor as this ships priority mail, so the package will show up as quickly as if from most areas of the country.

For the safest outcome, watch your weather forecast for cool & overcast, for the upcoming Wednesday thru Friday. For most of the trip, during any time of the year, a package is in a temperature controlled environment and fairly safe the entire trip - until your local mail carrier places it in their truck. If its extremely cold, hot, or sunny while they are delivering the mail, risk increases significantly.

Starting a Culture:

Key to the safest startup is raising the organic level and giving that enough time to cycle completely. When you are watching/reading content on shrimp & daphnia you will see references to bio-film, biome, micro-organisms, cycle, etc, which is the result of decaying & decayed organic matter. The more organic matter that is allowed to decompose, creates a more stable biome, and generates naturally occurring food for the shrimp & daphnia. These are important factors when starting shrimp & daphnia in a fresh tank.

Steps:

Start with the standard setup: water, gravel, sponge filter, small plant, heater set no less than 65 degrees, and a light. Driftwood and snails are helpful.

Water:
A: Fish Tank: Water from a hydra free fish tank is ideal and requires little cycling time.
B: Tap: Both these organisms have a sensitivity to chemicals in treated water. If you have heavily treated water it requires additional resting time.

Organic Matter:
Its safest to start these organisms in a tank that is more on the organic rich side. Over the course of cycling add a few doses of fish tank mulm and allow it to decay. Mulm is the debris you vacuum from the bottom of your fish tanks. As it decays it turns into your biome. That biome keeps your culture stable and generates flora & fauna that each of these organisms will consume. Add enough mulm that it equals what a low tech aquarium would contain.
