Cryptocoryne balansae. Is a native plant of India, Thailand, Indonesia and Philippine. It is a very decorative aquarium plant with wider and longer leaves than Cryptocoryne retrospiralis and Cryptocoryne spiralis. The leaves can reach up to 24 inches and 1.5” inch in width under optimum condition. The leaves have a distinct hammered texture.
It is easy to care for of despite its delicate and graceful appearance. When put in groups it creates a nice cluster swaying in the current of your aquarium. This plant does very well in hard alkaline water, it is a popular plant because it is relatively easy to grow, and it’s long corkscrew shape reed-like leaves, makes for a unique background. This plant is light green with light brown stems. Bright lights will bring out the colors and hammered pattern of the leaves.
This species will propagate is by side shoots, runners and rhizome division. All plants are sensitive to copper; Cryptocoryne balansae is no exception. Be aware about the type of medication you are introducing to the aquarium, especially chemicals to control snails infestation, those are usually copper based and should not be added to a planted aquarium.
