Mini Bolbitis

This is a dwarf form of Bolbitis with a leaf form just like Bolbitis heudelotti and I believe it is B. heudelotti 'Small Form'. From the rhizome to leaf tip averages only 2" to 3" up to a maximum of about 4". I have read that it can reach 6" but that has not been my experience, maybe they mean high tech with CO2 injection. The fern-like leaf form is lovely but the vivid green when light shines through the translucent leaves is what makes this plant a favorite of mine.

These three pieces were pruned a month ago but either didn't show a growing tip, or were middle sections of a longer rhizome. I attached them to a plexi angel slate and left them to sprout. Short term, the new growth will be smaller than the existing leaves, the new rhizome sprouts will be very slender. However there will be a lot of branches and you will have the choice of leaving everything intact for a small bushy clump or cutting it up so each piece will have a couple of sprouts to cover more area.

Personally, I would cut it up. A year from now, even six months from now, you would have larger leaves (less competition, more water movement) and much more total plant. But I leave that up to you. :) These are the type of pieces I use when covering a new feature. Instead of just the rhizome shooting off in one direction, the branching forms a nice full patch.

Above is the three pieces together, the lines are about an inch apart for scale, below are close ups.

This piece has 6 or 7 new shoots starting and will make a very dense clump if left intact. I would cut it into 3 pieces.

This piece has 5 or 6 sprouts, I would also cut this one into at least 2 pieces.

This piece has one full sized sprout and a new tiny one just beginning, both on the same side. Leaves are gigantinormous, slightly over 4".

The older leaves aren't in perfect condition because... they are older leaves. But you should leave them on as long as you can so they can provide energy to the plant.

To be clear, this is a nano plant, what you receive will be small and it's always going to stay small. It will look lost if you try to put it in a big tank. But it's perfect for smaller cubes, especially with shrimp. I only trim twice a year, spring and fall, and there's a very limited amount of rhizomes.

Once established this plant is easy and I was pleasantly surprised that it had a reasonable growth rate with light ferts. And unlike regular B. heudelotti, it STAYS VERY COMPACT! It doesn't take years to spread and fill in. It has grown best for me with good water movement so avoid stagnant corners.

This is not what is being offered on ebay by the Asian sellers which has more finely divided leaves and growth slower than plate techtonics (Bolbitis heteroclita cuspidata? Bolbitis heteroclita difformis?). I feel this is a much more graceful plant than those which remind me of carrot or parsley leaves. Don't know why this remains so rare, it's an awesome plant.
