Medium size lilies spread lilypads up to five feet wide, large varieties might spread wider.� Start with 6" - 12" of water over their crown, the growing point where roots go down and lilypads and blooms go upwards.� Any heavy, fertile dark loam with a moderate proportion of clay mixed in works well to start a waterlily. When a waterlily shows a lapse in blooming, consider fertilising with tomato spikes, taking care not to trigger algae blooms.� Hardy waterlilies cope fine with Winter, set below the freeze line of ice on a pond.
