THE AMAZING MOSS BALL
I love moss balls and it isn't because I sell them the most. I love them because of what they do. See moss balls are considered a national treasure in Japan and they can be found in rivers bigger than ME.
What makes these balls so interesting is what they do. See whenever you have plants, you need light. Whenever you have light, you have the chance of getting algae. Plants need light and CO2 to do their gig. The problem is most people either don't have enough plants, or simply leave their lights on WAY TOO LONG!
If the lights are on, then the plants look for CO2 which DOESN'T always have to come from a bottle or outside source. There could be plenty of it in the water from fish or the atmosphere. The problem lies more with how long the lights are on rather than how much CO2 is available.
When the plants run out of CO2 and the lights are still on, they stall, or start to die. This is when ALGAE takes it's TURN. When plants stall, algae moves right in and starts sucking up the lights and nutrients that plants no longer can. The simple trick is to TURN YOUR LIGHTS OFF STUPID.
See plants don't care when the lights come on of go off. When they are on, they do their gig, when they go off, they stop. Plants are not as embarassed as some of us are to do their gig, they do it with the lights on. But algae has to wait in line, kinda like sloppy seconds and just about the time algae is ready to take a turn......the lights go out!
So you can put your lights on a timer and give your plants a 2 hour siesta in between 4 or 5 hour shifts. They will still get what they need AND your algae will simply fizzle.
OK SO WHY MOSS BALLS?
Well what if what I just described is not that easy to do? Or the plants in your tank can't read all that crap? Or you are lazy or HAVE an algae problem now.
Add a moss ball.
See, moss balls LOVE waiting in line and they compete with algae and simply woop algae ALL DAY LONG. So when your plants have stalled, and it is time for algae to take a turn, it is also time for moss balls and by default they get to cut in line.
This is what we like to call preventative maintenance.
Now I get asked ALL the time how many balls is enough. Well, I can HONESTLY say that I make that answer up every time. But I also know that I must be on to something, because every person that I sell moss balls to at a show, ends up selling them for me the next year. If they had an algae problem, they no longer do.
Here is what I tell them. I tell them one Large Moss Ball per 25 gallons. So I usually sell three to a guy with a 75 gallon tank and all I know is they think I am a MAGICIAN.
