Ludwigia repens, broadleaf

Medium Light in picture above                                         Strong light in picture above,                                      Low light in picture above,
3 watts per gallon                                                             4 watts per gallon                                                                     2 watts per gallon

Ludwigia repens grows to a maximum height of 15-20 inches (38-50 cm), and if left untrimmed it can creep along the water’s surface.  This aquatic plant shows its best colors in moderate to high light conditions (2.0-3.0 wpg). It has a moderate growth rate in lighting conditions of 2.0 watts per gallon where it can grow up to half an inch in one day. In higher lighting conditions, Ludwigia repens can grow even faster and its leaves will display a rich red hue on both sides of its leaves.

When growing well, Ludwigia repens will bend slightly towards the lighting source and new stem branches will sprout from the main stem as it the plant reaches the surface.  In addition to new stems, Ludwigia repens is also known to sprout out regularly roots along the stem’s internodes. These roots are called aerial roots and can be pruned off to touch up the appearance of the plant.

Ludwigia repens can draw nutrients from the substrate though its heavy root system, but like most stem plants it does well with regularly water column fertilization. Micro nutrients, low levels of nitrates and phosphates (5 and 2 ppms respectively), in addition to higher lighting schemes will enhance the red hues of its leaves. This plant does well in a wide range of water conditions.

Ludwigia repens is easily propagated by cutting the stem in half and replanting the top.  The bottoms of the stems can then be discarded or left in place for new stems to sprout.
