Description

Sheepshead Minnows. Wild caught from Bayou Saint John, New Orleans. Also known as pupfish. These individuals are babies, they are under 1 in, most of them half an inch. These fish have been tanked for at least a week. This seems to be the season for baby pupfish to be common in the Bayou so I have been keeping them in tanks and they have been doing outstanding with still or light filtration. As babies, these fish can live in conditions very similar to mosquito fishes and killy fishes, Molly's and other live bears in terms of water flow and nitrate levels. Their behavior is not unlike a cichlid species. Their shape is reminiscent of cichlids as well and they also resemble a young bluegill or sunfish (Centrarchids). They are interested in algae pellets flakes and any other solid food as well as live food, daphnia and amphipods. I will send along a small supply even though they really do not need it as they will eat just about anything. They are active curious and responsive fish and quite beautiful. These are not common in the pet trade but perhaps they should be because they are delightful in an aquarium.
