Description

I pick out the best looking individuals I can find. Spots, bars, stripes, and iridescence are taken into account. I collect the fish from New Orleans watersheds, either Bayou Saint John, City Park, or Audubon Park, depending on the week. I include a balanced male to female ratio. Least killifish are live bearers (the world's smallest live-bearing freshwater fish). They can store sperm and females are often incubating young. It's likely that one or more of the females that I send you will be gravid (carrying developing embryos). She won't be conspicuously gravid because I've found that while near-to-term females can make it through the mail, they have a higher death rate than females who are further from giving birth. Individuals will have been tanked for at least one week prior to shipping and inspected for illness and fed on live food. An additional $20 will go towards shipping and you may bundle with other items in my store. Live arrival is expected but not guaranteed because I adhere to the following practices: I ship by Wednesday afternoon following the order so that the animals arrive within 2 or 3 days after drop-off at Post Office of UPS store. Post-collection, I tank the animals for a minimum of 2-3 days to make sure that they're healthy and energetic. These fish are inspected for fungus, torn fins and other maladies. I condition the water, bag with breathable industrial fish bags, topping off the air supply with a spurt of compressed oxygen. The water in the bag will be part conditioned rain or standing water and part water that they have been living in at the time of bagging. This reduces shock and conserves some beneficial flora. I usually include a few pieces of live aquatic plant in the bags for oxygen cycling. I double bag. The fish will be in air conditioned space when bagged, boxed and transported directed to the post office or UPS store, which is also air conditioned. I commit to bagging the day that I bring them to the post office or UPS store. I bag safely, with insulation and when necessary, a cold pack.
