The diminutive Dollar Sunfish is one of the most incredible species known! Found in slow streams and backwaters of the southeastern USA, this amazing creature could be mistaken for the rarest beauty from the darkest Amazon. As they grow, their intense, irridescent blue glows like neon acorss the entire body. Accented by deep red, reminiscent of the Neon Tetra, the colors of this fish are unrivaled and accent it dramatically against its dark, swampy habitat. The shape and behavior of this fish remind one of the marine Damselfishes. Yes, they are that nice!

The Lepomis sunfishes are similar to the Central American cichlids in terms of their body type, size and ecological niche. Breeding males will built nest pits in the substrate mostly by sweeping manuveurs of the tail. Often these are arranged in colonies with many males nesting side by side. Females enter to spawn and then leave immediately. Females and males are promiscuous and will spawn with multiple mates in mulitple nests multiple times. The Dollar Sunfish is very hardy and adaptable to cold and high heat. Excellent for the aquarium or pond. Great in a planted tank. Will not destroy plants as many of the Cichlids will do.

Feed just about any high protein food. Crickets and other insects are especially relished. Easily trained to flakes or pellets.
