Rare gold! The golden or xanthistic form of the Redbreast Sunfish, a native of the eastern United States. The Lepomis sunfishes are similar to the Central American cichlids in terms of their body type and size and ecological niche. Breeding males will built nest pits in the substrate mostly by sweeping manuveurs of the tail. Often these are arranged in colonies with many males nesting side by side. Females enter to spawn and then leave immediately. Females and males are promiscuous and will spawn with multiple mates in mulitple nests multiple times. And here's the beauty of this golden form: In your backyard pond you can easily observe the intriguing behavior of this large sunfish as its bright color makes it highly visible. This piscine performer will give the old goldfish and koi a run for their money as the go-to fish for the garden pond. Ranging form Pennsylvania to Florida, the Redbreast is very hardy and adaptable to extreme cold and high heat.

Feed just about any high protein food. Crickets and other insects are especially relished. Easily trained to flakes or pellets.

Also excellent aquarium fish. Will not damage plants like larger cichlids often do. A planted tank is an excellent and healthful habitat for these sunnies. You will be able to see their unique behavior close-up, watch the development of their tiny fry and see the full brilliant colors of a breeding male. The males of this stock are expected to develop salmon red on the forward part of the body and head. These are very hardy fish and will give you years of pleasure.
