Description

Five (or other number at your request; contact me for info) small Red River pupfish, Cyprinodon rubrofluviatilis. Size 10-15 mm total length (juveniles). About the size and appearance of the ones in the left portion of the photograph. The larger specimen is an adult male displaying normal coloration. I have had these for at least a month. Although they are very hardy in many water conditions, especially salinity (tolerate fresh to brackish, prefer a happy medium), they are sensitive to ammonia and nitrites, and therefore are bagged individually or in pairs and shipped USPS Priority in Kordon Breathing Bags. Because they are susceptible to NH3s, add at least some salt to transition or aquarium water to allow the gills to purge the NH3s. At least 1/2 cup/10 gallons. They can be quickly transferred into freshwater from brackish (imagine a drought pool in a slightly salty river, drought increases salinity, and a rain/flash flood, will almost immediately remove the salinity; many studies have been done on this species regarding this ability). Avoid pH < 6.0. At this size, I can't guarantee gender. They are easy to sex even at an early age (but difficult to chase down!): Juveniles and subadults have the typical dorsal fin spot; males have a blue iridescent nape but this fades under distress (like when net enters tank). Adult females retain the posterior spot in the dorsal fin, but males lose this spot as they mature. Breeding males (see photo, the larger fish, which now belongs to a new keeper) develop a gold venter, especially anteriorly, pelvic, and pectoral fins, and also lose most of the bars. They are quite active and are voraciously eating flake food, occasionally supplemented with frozen bloodworms, frozen brine shrimp, and rarely live daphnia. They are WC and take to flake foods within 24 hours of collecting, or so. A sand substrate is best, but not necessary. (I can include a sample or other amount of their native sand, but this may increase shipping costs.) They occasionally "sleep" at night burrowed in the sand and dive into sand when startled or evading capture! They do well in a large community setup and tolerate a wide temperature range in nature (40-90 degrees F). These are also great for a small novelty tank with no heater for the office or for a child. ***Red River pupfish are in the group that includes the sheepshead minnow/pupfish (C. variegatus) and other pupfish native to Texas and New Mexico and should therefore NEVER BE RELEASED and NEVER BE HOUSED IN THE SAME AQUARIUM/WATER FEATURE with other pupfish to ensure no inadvertent mixing of genes. Pupfish of any kind should never be reintroduced in the wild for the same reason.*** >>>>> Terms and conditions <<<<< >>1) I can't guarantee "Extras" to compensate for possible losses, a common courtesy I would like to extend but may not be able at this time; >>2) Please photograph unopened bags, with date stamp or as soon as possible, clearly showing condition of contents and email photos immediately upon receipt, regardless of condition. Photos are required for credit; >>3) Guaranteed live delivery + 24 hours. Credit will be applied only via PayPal, a PayPal account is therefore required to receive credit for losses; >>4) Guarantee void upon transfer to another party; >>5) Shipping and material costs are not included and are the responsibility of the buyer. All orders are shipped USPS Priority prepaid and will include a $15 s/h fee, the difference of actual costs for s/h will either be refunded or billed via PayPal, as applicable. Larger orders may require higher shipping costs; >>6) Buyer agrees not to release unwanted specimens into the wild; >>7) PLEASE check my other auctions if you would like to purchase additional items to reduce shipping costs.
