Description

You are bidding on two pairs of Elassoma gilberti, the gulf coast pygmy sunfish.

This is what a dominant Elassoma gilberti male looks like:

Submissive males look like this:

The females look like this:

Their maximum size is about one inch long. They are very very small fish.

Do not expect your Elassoma gilberti to eat flake food. I feed my adults thawed cubes of frozen bloodworms, baby snails, and live grindal worms. They will also eat rotifers, mosquito larvae, California blackworms, etc.

Elassoma gilberti love plants. Dominant males claim a spot in the plants and woo the females into their territory to spawn. They will chase all other males away from their spot and will defend about a cubic foot of volume. If the plants are dense the individual territories of the males decrease in size because the plants disrupt the sightlines and the fish can't see one another, so there can be more dominant males per tank. If there aren't enough plants and the dominant male can see from one end of the tank to the other, then all of that becomes his territory. Therefore aquarists often prefer to disrupt the sightlines with dense plantings to allow a larger number of males to color up at once. Otherwise the entire tank could be submissive males with only one or two dominant males. That's why even though this is a one inch fish, it's a good idea to give them 10 gallons or more. You'll get more colorful males.

Here is a video of a male wooing a female into his territory:

After spawning the father will chase all other fish away from the spawn site to protect the eggs. This includes the mother:

You will then get little tiny baby Elassoma gilberti. The fry are very easy to raise. I feed mine microworms because I want to maximize fry survival. But they'll forage for themselves regardless. Here's a video of a tiny fry foraging for food:

At around one half inch long (four to five months or so in my tank) you can start to tell what gender they are.

They will breed and dance continuously if you keep them well fed. Just please feed them. I tried for months to get them to eat crushed flake food. Eventually I gave in because a good percentage of the fish were just too skinny and pitiable. This is the response of a starving Elassoma gilberti the first time ever seeing a grindal worm.

So learn from my mistake, please, and just be prepared to feed them their beloved worms. I bought a whole culture of grindal worms from a seller on aquabid and really like them; they're very easy to raise and the Elassoma gilberti love eating them. That is the food that I would recommend to other people. Grindal worms are easy to culture on synthetic substrate. I keep my worms in plastic shoe boxes on dollar store sponges, and I feed them Kibbles 'N Bits dog food. It works great; the thawed frozen bloodworm cubes are really just to vary their diet a little bit.

This is my first time selling Elassoma gilberti on aquabid. I'm really excited to be able to share this wonderful fish with you. :)
