15+ Walnut Mystery Snails

The snails you will receive will be almost marble sized. This variation has all the possible colors combined on one snail, it's the wild coloration. The foot is dark (like a Blue), the base color on the shell is deep yellow (like a Gold) and the stripes are maroon (like a Purple). When they are young they look slightly greener but when the stripes come in they look more like a dark walnut woodgrain. Some call these black but I wouldn't call even the darkest ones a true black, more like a dark striped brown.

I use these naturally colored snails in tanks where crayon colored snails would look out of place, such as with natives. I wouldn't quite call them camouflaged but they do seems to be pestered slightly less than a lightfoot brightly colored snail. If you have your heart set on a cotton candy pink mystery snail and nothing else will do, no, you won't like these. But if you are anything like me and appreciate things as nature has made them you will find these attractive, active and entertaining with as much personality as a snail is capable of. They even have faces with little orange eyes.

These snails live with fish and they tend to end up in the same places that my bristlenose like. Occasionally they get kicked out of caves or whatever. There are minor shell imperfection which do not affect the health or well being of the snail.

These do need veggies in their diet. Collard or dandelion greens are great choices. Green beans and peas are good too. Plain lettuce doesn't really have any nutritional value (except Romaine). They will eat dead plant foliage and some soft algaes but I would not call them a serious algae eater. Mystery snails are generally plant-safe unless they are starving. The only live healthy plants I have had them munch on is watersprite and Subwassertang.

They like to clean up fish food which has fallen to the bottom. This is important if you ever overfeed. You do not want old food rotting in the tank with the chance that a fish might try to eat it. It's a misconception that snails eat fish poo, sorry, it doesn't work like that. They don't eliminate the need to clean the tank or do waterchanges.

Suitable tankmates include most gentle community fish. Most loaches and cichlids are poor choices. Even if the snail is not killed outright, constantly having their antennas or bodies nipped at will make their lives miserable. In a suitable environment, mystery snails are active.

The winner will receive a comprehensive care sheet which can be downloaded and printed if desired. Briefly, no acidic water, no soft water, no big fish. Temps up to 80F. These make good companions for guppies, nano fish and especially easy shrimp.
