The Marisa cornuarietis, commonly known as the Giant Columbian Ramshorn, is a member of the Ampullariidae family. These Ramshorn snails get much larger than the more common Ramshorns of the Planorbidae family. This is an easily recognizable species: the shell is flat-coiled and is brick red in color. The shell color may sometimes be darker or more vivid, and is fairly often striped. The shell diameter of an adult is usually 35-50 mm (2 in) or even larger. This species has gills as well as a lung, to ensure efficient underwater respiration even in condition of low levels of dissolved oxygen. They eat many aquatic plants, algae, and dead fish and snails. Easily adaptable to captivity, this snail may invade and damage aquarium vegetation. It is practically omnivorous, and feeds on animal and vegetal detritus. This snail acts as a useful aquarium scavenger when it is not excessively numerous. This species of Ramshorn Snail required both a male and female to reproduce. They lay eggs in globules, which tend to be brownish in color. The globules contain a couple dozen or so eggs, though it can vary. The globules are translucent, so it is possible to visually see the new snails develop in size.
