Tylomelania History

Nearly a century of neglect, with little mentioning by Woltereck (1931, 1941) and Wesenberg-Lund (1939), the beautiful gastropods in two central lake systems, Lake Poso and the Lakes of Malili system, provide a great opportunity for studying the evolutionary and taxonomic of Tylomelania species.

These ancient lakes, Lake Poso and the Lake of Malili System, were discovered by the Swiss naturalist Paul and Fritz Sararin in 1896.

Tylomelania from Sulawesi shares a common reproductive anatomy and strategy which they are brooding its young in the uterus. 32 species of Tylomelania currently have been described from both ancient lake systems Sulawesi.

Notes

I would like to say ,Thank you, to a good Samaritan, professor Andrew Bouwma from Kentucky University. He forwarded me two research documents on Tylomelania so that I correctly can indentify my Sulawesi snails.

In fact, I am not a snail expert. However, my ambition of these beautiful snails leads me to do some research on it. I hope this information above can help every hobbyist has a general idea about these great gastropods. I wish everyone luck with our new adventure and thank you for reading. Anthony
