Description

You are bidding on 10 juvenile fish of Malanda rainbow fish or Melanotaenia sp. Williams Creek that were tank bred/raised by me and are at the age of 9 months and about 1-2 inches. Both sexes will be included so you can breed the fish (I am happy to tell you how I bred them successfully). A few more fish available for the winning bidder. According to Peter Unmack, this is a critically endangered rainbow fish in the wild that stays small (about the size of M. praecox) and turns bright red when displaying to females. Malanda rainbow fish are very unique among rainbow fish. I have not bred a Melanotaenia species that is anything close to Malanda rainbow fish. This is a fish for serious hobbyists who want to maintain an endangered fish and are willing to dedicate a tank for this species. For more information about Malanda rainbow fish become a member of ANGFA (there is a North America membership available) to give you access to their newsletter called Fishes of Sahul. The December 2016 edition of Fishes of Sahul is entirely dedicated to Malanda rainbow fish and is entitled Malanda Gold: the tale of a unique rainbowfish from the Atherton Tablelands, now on the verge of extinction by Peter Unmack, Keith Martin, Michael Hammer, Brendan Ebner, Karl Moy & Culum Brown. https://www.wellbeingintlstudiesrepository.org/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1000&context=ichthy The Malanda rainbow fish is a unique species endemic to a small area of upland rainforest habitat in Far North Queensland. The fish are threatened by extinction through hybridization with other rainbowfish, mainly Eastern rainbow fish. Malanda rainbowfish have been found in the Ithaca River system, Williams Creek and an unnamed creek Wallace Road. The characteristics of Malanda rainbowfish are the very tall, flag-like first dorsal fin and the square shaped second dorsal and anal fins when extended. The second dorsal and anal fins never overlap the caudal peduncle in Malanda rainbowfish whereas they do so in nearby located Lake Eacham and Eastern rainbowfish. All fins of Malanda rainbowfish can be edged in black in breeding males. Breeding efforts of genetically pure Malanda rainbow fish and reintroduction into rainbowfish free streams that have significant barriers to prevent invasion by Eastern rainbowfish have been conducted. I received my breeders from Steve Brooks in Australia. My adult breeders are mid-sized rainbow fish, about the size of M. maccullochi and M. praecox. The photo shows an adult male. I will do my best to select both females and males thus you can breed the fish, however I do not guarantee a certain gender ratio. If you want to increase your chances of getting both sexes, more fish are available for the winning bidder at the auction price. Very limited numbers available at this point. PAY-PAL Payment ONLY. Payment must be sent within 24 hours of Auction end. USPS Shipping to CONTINENTAL US STATES ONLY. Shipping UPS next day estimate is $50. These are estimates only, for exact shipping costs I will need a zip code. I will combine fish from other auctions in one package. I am not responsible for any delayed shipping, nor will I file the paperwork to reimburse the shipping costs. DOA policy (please read before bidding): Live delivery guaranteed ONLY with UPS next day, delivery time is not guaranteed. I cannot be responsible if the UPS delays the delivery. Refund is given only on fish (or fish will be replaced) (not shipping costs). Picture of DOA fish in shipping bags must be sent within 2 hours of delivery for refund of fish. By placing and winning the bid you have read and agree to these terms.
