Description

This Melanotaenia australis rainbow fish is actually a M. splendida based on their DNA. Freshwater Fishes of Australia Vol #2 (Gunther Schmida) pg 30 says; �Although it apparently carries Melanotaenia splendida genes, this rainbowfish from the upper reaches of the Katherine River fits the �australis� mould morphologically.�The body of this rainbow fish is a rich crimson color with deep crimson stripes that are highlighted by strong black fins. To top off an already beautiful fish a reflective purple adorns the dorsal area of the fish and highlights the fins.
