CRYSTAL RED SHRIMP PACKAGE! Shrimp, Plants, & More!
So lately I've become obsessed with shrimp. They're funky looking, colorful, fun to watch, and don't need a lot of space to thrive. I have a bunch of colonies in 5g tanks right now. Fun stuff.
Anyway, I really like crystal red shrimp - not the funky, mostly-white SSS+ Mosura types, though. Always seemed to me that something called a crystal red shrimp should actually be, y'know, RED. The white candy cane stripes are cool, but not so much when they start taking over the whole shrimp. Because of that, I mostly keep the "lower" grade CRS - A/B/C grades. On top of being a lot hardier than the inbred SSS types, they just make more sense to me (if one wants a white shrimp, that's what golden-white bee and snowball shrimp are for!).
Ranting aside, here's a package for anyone who wants to try out these super-cool shrimp.I'm going to send you:
10 B/C grade CRS (Caridina cantonensis sp. 'Red Bee'). These guys like slightly soft, slightly acidic to neutral water at a cooler temperature - 68-72 degrees is perfect. If your house stays that warm, you don't even need a heater for these guys (which is my favorite kind of critter to keep - saves on the electric bills and all).
A nice portion of Willow Moss (Fontinalis sp.) will give your new shrimp a place to hide. Like the CRS, this is a species that prefers water on the cooler side. It will sometimes stop growing in the upper 70s, and die in discus temps, but in a 70-degree CRS tank it's an ideal plant, in my opinion. You don't see this in the hobby that often, at least not Stateside - I hear Amano uses it in some of his nature aquaria, though.
Next, I'm throwing in a nice bunch of golden creeping jenny (Lysimachia nummularia 'Aurea'). Mostly because I have a ton of this stuff and think it's really awesome. This is one of the few aquatic plants that displays yellow to lime green foliage without suffering nutrient deficiencies. Great for color contrasts and, other than a moderate amount of light (which is easy to provide in a small, shallow tank), it's very undemanding. Massachusetts bidders note that this plant is prohibited, I will substitute another species in its place if you win.
I'll include 8 Amazon Frogbit plants (Limnobium laevigatum). This is a floating plant that has nice, long roots that fish and shrimp love to hide in and it provides a surface cover to help them feel secure. It's also fairly manageable for a floater. California bidders note that I will substitute another floating species in place of this.
I'll also throw in some bonus plants, my choice. The amount of extra plants will be determined by the final bid amount. Rest assured that no matter what you bid, I can cough up enough plants to make it worth your money and then some. I go out of my way to make sure you get a great deal.
I'm adding in a bag of hardwood leaves to help control your pH. The leaves also provide a medium for the growth of microorganisms that the shrimp feed on. And shrimp love to hide among crumpled leaf litter.
I'm going to finish this off with a small sample of some shrimp food. I feed my CRS Azoo Max Grow shrimp food, and they love it.The portion I'm sending is enough to last these shrimp a couple of weeks if you don't overfeed - crush the pieces into smaller granules, and feed only a small piece each day, no more than they can consume in 1-2 hours' time. Shrimp don't need much food to thrive.

Unless you live in the Arctic Circle, I doubt you'll need a heat pack for these, but if temps are regularly below 40 wherever you are let me know.
