Description

Everything you need for a shrimp tank!
(Except the shrimp and the tank setup)

All these auctions for colorful shrimp around here have me wishing I had an entire row of tanks to devote to the little buggers. For now, though, I'll settle for my 10-gallon of RCS and Blue Leg Posos. But enough about me and my tanks. This auction is about you.

I'm going to give you everything you need to start your own 10-gallon shrimp nano tank - except the shrimp and the tank setup. Get yourself a standard 10-gallon, slap a sponge filter in it, put a light on top, and start bidding on this auction. Let me worry about the pretty stuff that goes inside to make it nice and homey for the shrimps. Then go bid on one of those awesome shrimp auctions and get yourself a bunch of little critters to put in this thing.

For starters, you'll be getting 2 bags of my CT River Sand Substrate. This stuff is what I use in my own shrimp tank, and I have shrimp keepers on both coasts buying bags of it for their latest setup projects. Visually, many have compared it to ADA's Forest Sand. It's a dark, multicolor, mixed-grain sand that shrimp just love to poke through. See the photos below for reference. You'll have a choice of type - there's the River Sand, which is a great all-purpose sand substrate, or the River Mix, which has a little gravel sprinkled in to make it look as natural as possible. Shrimp like both, so it's up to you which you prefer. Or get one bag of each to mix. Just rinse clean and add to your tank like any other substrate. Each bag is about 2kg (about 4.4 lbs).

Next, I'm putting in a portion of Corkscrew Willow twigs. These are the twirly, twisty ends of the branches, and they provide a lot of visual interest, as well as being a jungle gym for shrimp. Bury the ends of the twigs in the sand or weigh them down with some pebbles (also included) to waterlog them. I leave the bark, which is paper thin and reddish in color, on the twigs. I do this for a reason. Usually you don't want bark on your driftwood, because it gets soft and peels off or rots in the tank. But, I've found shrimp (and plecos, and herbivorous fish in general) absolutely love to nibble and pick at this bark as it softens and peels away from the twigs. The bark is so thin that it's practically nonexistent, so it has no more impact on the water chemistry than a dead leaf.

Speaking of dead leaves, you'll also be getting a bag of 10-15 dried oak leaves. Add one to the tank whole or crumble it to make a leaf litter for the shrimp to pick through. Hardwood tree leaves like oak take longer to break down than softwood trees, so they won't foul the water if you keep up with your water changes. Once the shrimp devour their leaf, and the microorganisms that colonize its surfaces, add in a new one for them. These leaves are collected from a chemical-free watershed area, so you don't need to worry about them having anything harmful to the shrimp in them.

To weigh stuff down and complete the riverbank look, I'll be tossing in a bag of mixed granite pebbles. They're admittedly not terribly exciting, but they do their job. I'll try to pick some pretty ones, and it saves you the trouble of venturing out into the woods, dying of heat stroke, and/or getting poison ivy to find rocks.

Next, the plants. Since the focus here is the shrimp, I'm including only easy, low-maintenance, undemanding plants to help with your water quality and make the tank look nice..

First of all, you're getting a nice clump of Java moss, which makes a wonderful shelter for the shrimp to feel safe from predators. Tie it to the willow twigs or pebbles, or just let it sit on the bottom of the tank.

Next is a sandwich bag sized portion of Najas guadalupensis (Guppy Grass), which is a nice, easy-to-grow floating stem plant. Java moss sinks, so you'll have this to provide shelter up at the top of the tank.

For the background, I'll toss in half a dozen stems of Ludwigia - either L. repens x arcuata or L. arcuata, maybe even a little of both, depending on what I have available. These are easy, low-light stem plants that don't need any special care to grow nicely. I can substitute L. palustris (Red Ludwigia), which likes a little more light, if you ask me to.

I'll also add one bonus plant, my choice, to the package. Maybe a bunch of hygrophila, a portion of some other moss, who knows. Something nice, though. Also, as a heads up, there's a possibility you'll get some hitchikers in the form of ramshorn or malaysian trumpet snails on the plants. They all get along great with shrimp.

So, that totals:
2 bags of sand
1 portion of willow twigs
10-15 oak leaves
1 bag of pebbles
1 clump of java moss
1 bag of guppy grass
1 bunch of Ludwigia stems
1 bonus plant

I'm starting this auction off at one dollar with no reserve. You guys bid it up as high as you want. All I ask is the winning bidder add $12 to cover a Priority Mail flat-rate medium box with a tracking number (which is much cheaper than shipping sand by weight). If this auction goes higher than $35, I'll even ship everything for free. Any higher than $40, I'll start tossing in extra plants and fun stuff like that (and still ship for free, of course). The sand alone is a $20 value, so bid with confidence that you will get your money's worth.

Now, for the exciting part: photos! (Admittedly rather lousy ones - I'm not so good with aquarium photography)
