This hard-to-find, easy-to-keep live bearer was declared extinct in the wild in 2010. My population was originally collected from Rio Teuchitlan, Jalisco, Mexico but has been bred in captivity for over ten years. This population is originally from Greg Sage's collection. They are a healthy, active, and peaceful fish and can be kept with other fish, but I find they breed better in a species-only tank. They are happiest when water temperature is 68-78 degrees. The females have black speckling in their scales with a distinctive gold spangling along the lateral line. They also have a pink blush about the gills and throat. Males are darker colored (they turn a dark purple that is almost black when they are in the condition to breed), and their caudal fin has a distinctive orange band. Both males and females are an attractive and playful fish. The winning bidder will receive a mated pair 14-16 months old.
