Description

Sailfin Mollies Poecilia latipinna, 7Fry

Poecilia latipinna, 7 UnsexedFry. Watch them grow and become beautiful!

(See my other auctions for different quantities of females and/or fry).

I cannot offer adult males at this time;I have only a few breeders left after recent sales. As you can see from the photos of my breeder males, the offspring you will get come with amazing genes. It's hard to believe these are 100% wild strain latipinna, because some have so much gold, blue and/or extra-high sails with very dramatic markings. But these are the characteristics of the Mobile Bay area population. Customer feedback quote: "Nicest sailfins I've ever seen".

The adults offered are wild-caught but captive conditioned since early March, so they're proven healthy and have grown tame as guppies, swimming to the glass to beg for food! Fry are captive-born, all at least 2 weeks old and eating flakes and baby brine shrimp.

About wild sailfin mollies:

If you haven't seen these guys 'in person,' it's time to treat yourself, add color and action like you won't believe to your community tank, molly tank, or summer pond. They can even handle the ammonia put off by goldfish and koiif it's not too crowded, and are as beautiful and fun to watch from above as from the side. These beautiful livebearers are docile to other species, and males only "dance-fight"with each other occasionally (a stunning spectacle). Since they are mostly herbivores, they are safe around all species of fry, invertebrates, etc. This wild strain is arguably the prettiest and most lively of all the mollies so you may want to breed a pure line of them, but they can also cross with any other molly strain, so feel free to get your Mad Scientist on!

These guys and galshave been in captivity 3 months, acclimated to regular community freshwater salt level (near zero--you can drip them to total zero salt over a few hours and they'll be fine, but they really thrive with a tablespoon per 10 gallons or so, like most livebearers). This species can live in true marine salt level with slow acclimation, but rumor isit's not great for their kidneys and shortens their lifespan. Brackish water is just fine.Temperature-wise, as long as you don't make any sudden changes you really don't need to worry about a narrow range as you would with domesticated mollies. This group has lived most of the time in my outdoor aquariums since early March and their water has been as low as 47F and as high as 100F (no kidding). They've been eatinga variety of omnivore flakes, granules, and baby brine shrimp. If you order females they willarriveprehit and will give birth soon, no more than 30 days. The fry are born stout and smart--unlike helpless fry of domesticates, thesehave the sense to hide if you have other species in your community, and muscle to get moving fast. Tougher'n'a two-dollar steak!Spirulina powder/flakes and baby brine shrimp is a surefire recipe for fast growing babies.

Check out thisvideo (shot Mid-May). With these in your tank, even your friends who don't care about fish will be entertained. Kids? Yeah, they'll freak out.
