Description

Species: Xiphophorus hellerii Rio Otapa

Common name: Rio Otapa Swordtail

Quantity: 5 juveniles

Size of fish offered: about 1-1/2 to 2 inches

Adult size they will reach: Females about 5, males about 4 + a 3 to 4 tail

Sex of fish offered: mixed - you will get young males and females

Source/pedigree: F2s descended from stock brought to our club by Rusty Wessel, who collected them in Veracruz.

More available at winning bid price: Yes

Care/feeding notes: This is one of the largest growing location strains of Xiphophorus hellerii. The father of these fish touched both edges of a 7-1/2 inch breather bag with his nose at one end and tip of his sword at the other. The mother is nearly 5 long. Males develop a series of bright red to blood red spots in their dorsal fin. Their ventral fins and gonopodium are bright yellow. Both males and females have a dark stripe running from behind the eye to the caudal base, with a bright neon green above and below this stripe. Black spotting varies from individual to individual, being very heavy on some fish and non-existent on others from the same spawn. Spawns are well over 100 fry per drop. They take about 6 months to reach sexual maturity. They are taking high quality flakes, pellets, and assorted live foods. I would recommend at least a 30 tank, and better a 48 tank, for grow out. They are young, but some females are already dropping fry!
