Austrolebias affinis- Eggs You are bidding on 40+ hand-picked fertilized eggs of amazing and rare Brazilian annual killifish - Hypsolebias fasciatus TT 2003-07 NPoriginated from a temporary pool about 2 km from the right bank of Rio Preto, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil.
For breeding purposes the aquarium size should be at least 10 15 litres for a pair or trio (1 male and 2 females). It is recommended using a small, air-driven sponge filter to prevent water stagnation. Water should be slightly hard and alkaline with a pH of around 5.5 6.5 and a temperature of 21C - 24C. The aquarium can be unlit or moderately illuminated. This fish is not aggressive, although there might be an occasional aggressive male that might need to be separated from the group. The fish should be conditioned on a varied diet of preferably live food. Keep the two sexes apart in separate conditioning tanks and select the best male and plumpest females, before placing them in the spawning tank. This method allows females to recover between spawnings. Hypsolebias fasciatus are quite prolific spawners if conditioned and fed well. These fish are substrate divers when spawning. The layer of peat needs to be at least 2 3 cm or even deeper if you want the fish to feel comfortable while spawning. Peat moss is the preferred medium but any other suitable type of spawning substrate can be used. The eggs are small in size, from 0.5 to 0.6 mm, and can withstand much abuse. The eggs are not adhesive and can be seen in a peat moss with a bit of effort. Each spawning group should only be allowed to spawn for a week or so before being returned to the conditioning tank. The spawning process is hard on the fish (particularly the females) and they can become fatigued and weak if left for too long.
Following the removal of the adult fish, the peat moss should also be removed from the aquarium. It should be placed in a mesh net and dried on newspaper for several hours until it is moist rather than sodden. Then place it in a plastic bag (the zip-lock type are good) and keep it at a temperature of 21C - 24C. If you are spawning several species or multiple broods it is a good idea to label each bag with the date, hatching date and species to prevent any disasters. Hatching can usually be induced by simply placing the eggs in shallow water in the raising aquarium after 13 - 15 weeks if incubated at 24C - 27C, where the wetting of the eggs stimulates hatching. Do not be tempted to hatch the eggs early, as this can impair the development of the fry. If the eggs fail to hatch, place the peat back into storage for another 2 - 4 weeks. Repeat this until you get a hatch. Some breeders even re-dry the peat following a hatch and wet it again after another 4 6 weeks. This often yields more eggs that have developed more slowly.
The fry are tiny and initial food should be Infusoria. After 4 5 days they can be fed Microworms and BBS with the introduction of larger and frozen varieties after 3 weeks or so. Extreme care must be taken regarding water quality in the raising tank or container. The fry should be fed twice a day with small water changes every 2 - 3 days for the best growth. The water must initially be kept very shallow but the level can be raised as the fry grow.
Please note that the eggs incubation period of Hypsolebias fasciatus can be as long as 7 - 8 months if incubated at 17C - 20C and even longer, depending on temperature fluctuations, peat moisture, and other factors. You need to be patient and to check the eggs every 2 - 3 weeks for their development. You may need to re-wet them several times in a few week periods. You may have some eggs of this species with incubation period over a year with a good hatch rate thereafter. Wet the eggs only when they are fully developed (fully eyed up). Hypsolebias fasciatus can be sexed out in about 5 to 6 weeks, and ready to breed at 8 9 weeks. This species can be easily bred and maintained as long as you act in accordance with all the recommendations.

The eggs are posted in a peat moss or coir enclosed in a plastic bag which is placed in a padded bubble envelope. Unfortunately I can't guarantee the hatching, hatch rate, sex ratio, etc. The storage conditions during transportation are out of my control. Please make sure before bidding that the temperature is not too cold at your area. Important: I don't refund money or re-send another pack of eggs if the package is lost in the post, seized by customs of your country, the eggs are dissolved in peat moss for whatever reason, or you did something wrong and couldn't manage to hatch the fry. Please check the eggs on arrival so that if they dissolve later due to wrong incubation conditions or any other reason, you don't tell me that there were no eggs. It's not my responsibility, you deal with Mother Nature! Please read appropriate literature, study various Internet sources dedicated to killifishes before ordering the eggs. Apart from all other things I am a very busy person and I cant physically give instructions to everyone on how to hatch, keep and breed killifishes. Ordering eggs from me you completely agree with all my statements mentioned above. I hope on your understanding. The eggs are sent from Glasgow (Scotland). All prices are listed in British Pounds (GBP). Delivery within the UK is 3.00 GBP, Europe - 7.00 GBP, other countries - 8.00 GBP. Thanks for looking, happy bidding and enjoy your hobby!
