Description

Fundulopanchax scheeli

You are bidding on 1 week spawn of 1 pair (male and female) of amazing and extremely rare South American annual killifish - Gnatholebias hoignei «El Samán de Apure» F3 originated from one of temporary pools within the Apure River basin (tributary of the Orinoco River), in Sosa Municipality, State of Barinas, Venezuela. The habitat of this species is in shaded pool that have muddy bottom. Because of the clay the waters are mostly turbid and the species dives into the substrate to lay their eggs. In sunny places you can see them schooling in the sun at water surface.

For breeding purposes the aquarium size should be at least 40 – 60 litres for a pair or trio. It is recommended using a small, air-driven sponge filter to prevent water stagnation. The aquarium can be unlit or moderately illuminated. Gnatholebias hoignei are not a very aggressive or territorial species and a few males and females can be kept together in a spawning setup if you can provide a large enough aquarium. They can be very timid and shy so supply the pairs some sort of covering they can hide under. I use a leaf litter at the bottom of the spawning tank. They are good jumpers, a good aquarium cover is required.

The fish should be conditioned on a varied diet of live food. Gnatholebias hoignei dive completely into the substrate and for that they need a thick layer of peat or coir to dive in. To achieve the full thickness of the length of the fish it is wise to use a deep container with a covered top and an entrance opening at the side that allow the fish to enter. Diving propels the peat up and if no cover is on the top the peat will be spread into the tank leaving the container empty in a day or so. The eggs must be collected every week and stored up to 8 - 10 months under rather high temperatures 28°C - 33°C. Well boiled (disinfected) peat moss or coir is the preferred medium. I use large and deep enough spawning containers for this species.

Please note that Venezuelan species require a higher breeding and egg incubation temperature than South American annual killifishes from other locations on the continent. If the conditions are right for this species it can, and will, be a quite prolific spawner. If the egg incubation temperature is too low the eggs will not develop and the embryo will die. Keep the incubation temperature at least 28°C.

The eggs are large in size, about 2.0 – 2.5 mm. The eggs are very sticky and extremely hard to find in peat moss. The newly hatched fry are large and take BBS at birth. The fry are quite fast growers for their size and can be sexed out in about 8 weeks. Frequent water changes are essential.

Please note that the eggs incubation period of Gnatholebias hoignei can be as long as 8 - 10 months if incubated at 28°C and even longer, depending on temperature fluctuations, peat moisture, and other factors. You need to be patient and to check the eggs every 3 - 4 weeks for their development. You may need to re-wet them several times in a few weeks’ periods. Wet the eggs only when they are fully developed (fully eyed up).

The eggs are posted in a peat moss or coir enclosed in a plastic bag which is placed in a padded bubble envelope. Unfortunately I can't guarantee the hatching, hatch rate, sex ratio, etc. The storage conditions during transportation are out of my control. Please make sure before bidding that the temperature is not too cold at your area. Important: I don't refund money or re-send another pack of eggs if the package is lost in the post, seized by customs of your country, the eggs are dissolved in peat moss for whatever reason, or you did something wrong and couldn't manage to hatch the fry. Please check the eggs on arrival so that if they dissolve later due to wrong incubation conditions or any other reason, you don't tell me that there were no eggs. It's not my responsibility, you deal with Mother Nature! Please read appropriate literature, study various Internet sources dedicated to killifishes before ordering the eggs. Apart from all other things I am a very busy person and I can’t physically give instructions to everyone on how to hatch, keep and breed killifishes. Ordering eggs from me you completely agree with all my statements mentioned above. I hope on your understanding. The eggs are sent from Glasgow (Scotland). All prices are listed in British Pounds (GBP). Delivery within the UK is 3.00 GBP, Europe - 7.00 GBP, other countries - 8.00 GBP. Thanks for looking, happy bidding and enjoy your hobby!
