Description

This is to offer 20+ hand-picked fertilized eggs of amazing killifish - Epiplatys dageti monroviae. The fish originates from the vicinity of Monrovia, Liberia. This subspecies differs from the type species by having a red throat as well as having 5 - and not 6 - transverse bars. This subspecies has ranked for decades among the most popular of aquarium fish. The reasons are its attractive colouring and it is offers few problems when breeding. It should be mentioned that the sex ratio is often very unfavourable. When this happens it is often worthwhile to modify the temperature. Other than this, this species is undemanding. It eats everything, requires no special water conditions and is remarkably social for a killifish. If one wants to see this fish in the splendour of full colour, use a tank with soft to moderately hard water, provide qualitatively good foods and reduced lighting. Other requirements are the same as the type species.

A dimly lit tank with areas of dense planting and pieces of driftwood and rocks arranged to form hiding places suits this species. Floating plants are also recommended. The tank should have a tightly fitting cover as Epiplatys dageti monroviae are excellent jumpers.� The species is an egg-scatterer and they are not difficult to breed. A spawning tank should be set up containing soft, slightly acidic water of pH 6.0 � 6.5, temperature around 22�C - 24�C. Slight deviation from these parameters is acceptable. It should be brightly lit with floating plants for cover and lot s of spawning medium in the form of fine-leaved plants such as java moss or nylon spawning mops. No substrate is necessary and gentle filtration via a small air-driven sponge filter is sufficient. The fish should be conditioned in a separate aquarium with lots of live food before a trio comprising 1 male and 2 females is selected and placed in the spawning tank. The group will spawn daily, depositing eggs every 24 hours for around 2 weeks and these should be removed gently as they are noticed. Each trio should only be allowed to spawn for a week or so before being returned to the conditioning tank as the spawning process is hard on the fish (particularly the females) and they can become fatigued and weak if left for too long. The eggs should be transferred daily to a small aquarium containing water from the spawning tank to a depth of 1-2 inches to which has been added 1-3 drops of methylene blue, depending on volume. This container should be checked daily for fungussed eggs, which should be removed with a pipette. The eggs will hatch in 10 - 14 days depending on temperature. The fry are tiny and require infusoria as first food. They can be offered microworm or brine shrimp nauplii from the third or fourth day.

The eggs are posted in a peat moss enclosed in a plastic bag which is placed in a padded bubble envelope. Unfortunately I can't guarantee the hatching, hatch rate, sex ratio, etc. The storage conditions during transportation are out of my control. Please make sure before bidding that the temperature is not too cold at your area. Important: I don't refund money or re-send another pack of eggs if the package is lost in the post, seized by customs of your country, the eggs are dissolved in peat moss for whatever reason, or you did something wrong and couldn't manage to hatch the fry. Please check the eggs on arrival so that if they dissolve later due to wrong incubation conditions or any other reason, you don't tell me that there were no eggs. It's not my responsibility, you deal with Mother Nature! Please read appropriate literature, study various Internet sources dedicated to killifishes before ordering the eggs. Apart from all other things I am a very busy person and I can�t physically give instructions to everyone on how to hatch, keep and breed killifishes.
