Description

This auction is for 6 unsexed, juvenile Corfu toothcarp. This is a very rare killifish from Greece and Albania. It is presently either extirpated from most of its natural range or critically endangered. Mainly due to habitat loss and invasive species. I'm listing them as unsexed, juveniles because they have not yet developed adult coloration. I am reasonably certain there are mixed sexes though based on females getting rather plump after feeding while males stay slim even after feeding. This is not a tropical fish. I keep mine in the bottom rack of my unheated, basement fishroom. They hover between 60-65 degrees. My experience is that they are a skittish fish in the aquarium unless the tank is loaded with something like hornwort. The more choked the tank is with plants, the more you will see them. Based on fish I've kept I would say they are very similar in habits to aphanius mento. Which is to say that if you've kept mento then I think you will do well with these guys. My success with them is result of trial and error. I'm sure other hobbyists have had success with them through other methods. I wanted to observe the fish and attempt to maintain them in my fishroom. I keep mine is a well planted 55 gallon. It gets a weekly water change and the front glass cleaned but nothing else. The less I mess with them the better-off they are. I keep 4 males to 2 females. That's just what I ended-up with when I acquired mine as juveniles. The males stake-out a territory amongst the hornwort, defend it from rival males and attempt to coerce a female to spawn. The males can be aggressive amongst themselves but I've never observed any injury. They quickly engage and disengage. Males are considerably smaller than females in length and mass. Males are approx 1" and females maybe 1.5". I will find free swimming fry up at the surface swimming in the hornwort. Not dozens, but a few every week. I've also pulled eggs and water incubated them. Eggs are large(larger than a gularis) and amber colored. The eggs size in relationship to the size of the fish is really incredible. Eggs hatch in water in about 14 days. Free swimming fry are large and immediately take live baby brine. Mine are engaged in spawning behavior all of the time. When really ramped-up the males are a steel blue with vertical stripes, the dorsal surface turns a silver almost white iridescent. In a poor set-up and without proper nutrition they look like a gray minnow. My adults eat Tetramin flake, frozen bloodworms, live blackworms and really relish mosquito larvae in the summer. They are finicky eaters. Mine won't touch certain flake foods, frozen brine and granules. They are slow growing and late to produce eggs. Be patient. I don't think this fish is for everyone. It is not impossible to care for but does require some dedication. In absence of some dedication it will perish. I also think it is a very worthwhile fish to keep in your fishroom. Like many goodeids, which we hear so much about, the Corfu toothcarp is in trouble. The fish you are bidding on are about 1/2" - 3/4". They are eating Tetramin flake, chopped frozen bloodworms, live blackworms and the occasional squirt of live baby brine. Shipping is $35, non-refundable, on top of the winning bid. This auction will ship overnight. At the close of the auction I will send the winning bidder an email with payment instructions. This auction will ship Tuesday, 11/15/22. Thanks for looking.
