Oryzias latipes is a species-complex(different species that are close genetically) containing fixed & variable genetics; there are over 500 variances buried away in their genetics. For centuries, in parts of Asia, it has been a hobby keeping these fish in water-garden pots because of highly reflective characteristics, but dont think of them as pond/outdoor fish as many are also great looking aquarium fish. And with the advent of colored LEDs to illuminate our aquariums, because of Medakas reflective & glowing nature, they now reward us with light displays few other aquarium fish can.

This fish has an image problem and is sometimes described as lacking color. The Blue Sparkle gets its name from highly fluorescent, frosty blue scales sprinkled around its body. Keep in mind the color/hue of this fish isnt its best feature. This fish is known for adding an intense sparkling & shimmering effect into our aquariums. When a Blue Sparkle goes through swimming motions, light rolls down the fishes body - reflecting off sparkle scales, creating a shimmer effect. And because each fish's color/ hue, sparkle, shimmer, and other reflective aspects can be significantly different - the entire school becomes a unique, ever changing light display. It may not be the prettiest fish at the party however, it has the most bling - and each individual fish wears its bling differently!

Our Medaka lines are kept separated at all times. Because they are aquarium bred, that allows us to select only the most desirable medaka forms & traits for our breeding group. The Blue Sparkle you commonly see, and not very pretty, is more of a wild-type from an unculled colony. Our Blue Sparkle will produce a greater percentage of offspring containing higher medaka forms & traits. The fish in the listing picture is called Pearl Galaxy and appears regularly. Its translucent(hue) with a soft white-gold tint when under a daylight spectrum light - which highlights its frosty blue sparkle scales perfectly, a look of chrome in spots, a highly reflective blue eye, and an elongated anal fin. When under LED lights it glows in the colors of the diode it's under.

FYI: You will often see Blue Sparkle sold in groups. The reason for that is they are a species complex and have also been genetically manipulated for centuries - so not all Oryzias latipes will successfully reproduce. Starting with a group ensures genetic viabilities.

Lets back up - there are three common color & hue varieties of Medaka: White Platinum, Gold, and Blue Sparkle. There are a few exceptions, and you can get to other colors thru selective breeding, but those are the three common lines. The white and gold lines breed true. The blue sparkle line does not breed true so individual fish may look significantly different. There are over 500 documented variances, many of which appear in the Blue Sparkle line. Typically, the blue sparkle you see is from an unculled colony, a wild type, and not very appealing. However, start selectively breeding, and all sorts of cool medaka forms & traits start regularly appearing. If you were to look at our Blue Sparkle breeding group youd swear most were different species because they look so different from each other. They can be different colors and/or hues - silver, olive, white, pink, black, and a few others. Some can be heavily coated in sparkle scales while others have none, have an orange head, missing a fin, a couple different eye colors, mottled patterning, resemble a Daisy Ricefish, and/or have a short or balloon body.

How does a person get to a particular looking Medaka? What if you really like one specific Medaka, such as our favorite the Blue Platinum? Medaka grow very fast and you will notice individual medaka forms & traits within days of hatching, so catching & isolating individuals is easy. Keeping the Blue Sparkle is a good excuse to use that hang-on isolation box you love so much and never get to use; when you see a baby that looks like a favorite - save it.

What exactly is it that we ship you? This is for a group of Blue Sparkle - offspring from our dedicated breeding group. They will look noticeably different from each other. This ensures genetic viability, and enough variability to continue producing higher Medaka forms & traits. Every fish will be visually appealing - no junk.

SHIPPING:
Livestock is shipped in 1 & 2 liter soda bottles placed into a USPS flat rate bag. Why? Soda bottles are shatter resistant and hold substantially more water - reducing stress and water toxicity during transit. When transitioning do so in the bottle. If there are plants in the bottle pick them out beforehand.

The vulnerable time for a package is when out for delivery. Its important you greet the mail carrier and take the package directly from them.

If your overnight lows are below 45 degrees the package will be shipped to your post office for pick up.

FYI: We dont offer the option of heat packs. They are problematic because they are too hot when not needed, and typically spent when they are most needed. If your weather is so cold a heat pack is necessary - its simply too cold to order a live animal!!! Also, Medaka are a cold hardy fish, so a heat pack isnt necessary if temperatures arent mild.

GUARANTEE:
We have the best guarantee around: If DOA, send us a picture and a one time replacement will be sent at zero cost.
