We only keep the most desirable medaka forms & traits in our breeding group, and our lines are kept separated at all times. The result being our Super Blue Sparkle have offspring with a greater chance of containing the higher medaka forms & traits.

What is a Medaka and a Blue Sparkle:
Oryzias latipes is a species-complex(different species that are close genetically) containing fixed & variable genetics; there are over 500 variances buried away in their genetics. For centuries, in parts of Asia, it has been a hobby keeping these fish in small water-garden pots because of their reflective characteristics, but dont think of them as pond/outdoor fish as many are also great looking aquarium fish. And with the advent of colored LED lighting to illuminate our aquariums, medaka now reward us with fascinating light shows.

The Blue Sparkle is a different experience than we are typically familiar with in the hobby. Lets back up - there are three common color varieties of medaka: white(platinum), gold, and blue sparkle. The white and gold breed true; if kept with their own kind offspring resemble the parents. The blue sparkle line does not breed true; their offspring can/will have significant differences. There are over 500 documented variances, many of which appear in the Blue Sparkle line. Typically, the blue sparkle you see is from an unculled colony and not that pretty. However, start selectively breeding and all sorts of cool medaka forms & traits start regularly appearing. A prettier Blue Sparkle example, and a Medaka that appears frequently in our Super Blue Sparkle line, is the Pearl Galaxy Medaka and the male in the attached photo. One of our favorites, and a fish we make sure is represented in our breeding group at all times is the Blue Platinum Medaka - it looks almost identical to the White Platinum, except a steel blue.

So - the Blue Sparkle line throws a variety of different looking fish, especially if you selectively breed them. The offspring from any two parents can be a number of different colors, and possess any number of individual characteristics. They can be one of several different colors - silver, olive, white, pink, black, and a few others. Some can be heavily coated in sparkle scales while others have none, have an orange head, missing a fin, a couple different eye colors, mottled patterning, have a short or balloon body. If you enjoy working with your fish there are over 500+ known medaka variations you can tease out.

FYI: You will often see Blue Sparkle sold in groups. The reason for that is they are a species complex & have been genetically manipulated for centuries, so not all Oryzias latipes will successfully reproduce. Starting with a group ensures genetic viabilities.

How does a person get to a particular looking medaka? What if you really like one specific Medaka, such as the Blue Platinum? Medaka grow very fast and you will notice individual medaka forms & traits within days of hatching, so catching & isolating individuals is easy. A Medaka like the Blue Platinum is recognizable immediately after hatching. If you isolate similar fish they are likely to start producing similar fish, and if you keep different fish they will start producing rarer medaka characteristics. Keeping the Blue Sparkle is a good excuse to use that hang-on isolation box you love so much and never get to use.

Picture a school of these where each fish is noticeably different. That school is composed of medaka that have different bodies, different body colors, some have are transparent and others solid, each fish different in any number of ways. Then, you have a school where the school itself is unique and an ever evolving light display - depending on where each individual fish is in the school/tank. Keep in mind the beauty of this fish is that light display - when a light is turned on you will see this school of fish from across a room.

We hope that makes some sense of Medaka, and what makes the Blue Sparkle, particularly our Super Blue Sparkle strain, a must have for the fish enthusiast.

Back to our fish - what exactly is it that we ship you? This is for a group of Super Blue Sparkle - offspring from our dedicated breeding group. Each fish in our breeding group is selected from over hundreds of other Medaka - selected for possessing the most desirable forms, colors, & traits.

What exactly you receive depends on what size fish you order. Generally, we cull out a few medaka varieties as we notice them, such as panda, white, pinksall the less-appealing occurrences. Because our breeding group doesnt contain those Medaka forms & traits they will produce fewer of them, but they still appear. With our larger fish we have likely removed most of those medaka forms & traits. There is absolutely nothing wrong with these fish - some people are weirdos and love the Panda Medaka - a plain white fish with a big black eye, but generally we dont use less appealing medaka forms & traits in our breeding group.

You will receive fish most of which look noticeably different. This ensures genetic viability, and enough variability to keep producing cool Medaka. Our Super Blue Sparkle will be a mix of various medaka forms & traits, at least several of which will be higher Medaka forms & traits, and they will produce offspring many of which will be higher Medaka forms & traits.

SHIPPING:
Livestock is shipped in 1 & 2 liter soda bottles placed into a USPS flat rate bag. Why? Soda bottles are shatter resistant and hold substantially more water - reducing stress and water toxicity during transit. When transitioning do so in the bottle. If there are plants in the bottle pick them out beforehand.

The vulnerable time for a package is when out for delivery. Its important you greet the mail carrier and take the package directly from them.

If your overnight lows are below 45 degrees the package will be shipped to your post office for pick up.

FYI: We dont offer the option of heat packs. They are problematic because they are too hot when not needed, and typically spent when they are most needed. If your weather is so cold a heat pack is necessary - its simply too cold to order a live animal!!!

GUARANTEE:
We have the best guarantee around: If DOA, send us a picture and a one time replacement will be sent at zero cost.
