Description

6 unsexed, juvenile, aphanius mento. These guys are about half grown and starting to show secondary sex characteristics. I keep mine at room temperature(62-68 degrees depending on the season) in hard Lake Erie tap water. I feed mine Tetramin flake, frozen brine shrimp, frozen bloodworms and live blackworms. I harem breed mine. 1 male to 2 or 3 females. I keep my breeding group in a 20 long loaded with live hornwort. I keep several sinking yarn mops on the bottom for cover for the females. I've never had luck harvesting eggs from yarn mops. Males establish a territory in the floating hornwort. They attract females into the territory to spawn. When I see a fair number of eggs in the horwort, I pull that section of hornwort to a sterlite shoe box container to hatch. Eggs hatch quickly. Less than a week. Free swimming fry will eat newly hatched brine shrimp and microworms or vinegar eels. Growth is not rapid but steady. Sex ratio is about even. Do not keep mentos in tropical temperatures. They will waste away. They need to be kept on the cool side. They will even survive under ice for short periods. Males are very aggressive with each other. Typically the dominant male will kill any rival males over time. Mentos are a very hardy fish but have some basic needs that must be met to be successful with them. Shipping is $20 non-refundable on top of the winning bid. This auction will ship Wednesday 9/4 due to the Labor Day holiday. Payment is due at the close of auction on Tuesday 9/3. If payment is not received as requested, I will relist the auction. This is the last group I will have until winter or possibly early spring. If you would also like a microworm or vinegar eel starter culture, let me know and I will include it at no additional charge. Thanks for looking.
