Description

6 unsexed, juvenile aphanius mento, Ereli Konya Turkey. This is a very nice strain of fish. Adult males turn jet black with light blue dots(see adult male pictured). Females remain a mottled gray color. I harem breed mine. Usually 2-3 females to 1 male. Adult males are highly intolerant of other males to the extent that any subordinate males will be eliminated by the dominant male. Males are tolerant of females but are hard drivers to spawn. By keeping several females the male's advances are spread among the 3 females. I have a lot of hobbyists contact me that have trouble getting these guys to reproduce. Here's how I do it. They are not tropical fish and they do not do well at tropical temps. I'd say 72 and below is best. I keep mine in hard Lake Erie tap water. They like hard water. I keep them at whatever the ambient temp is in my basement and I keep them on racks closest to the floor. In winter mine go down to the mid to low 60's and that seems to slow or stall any spawning activity. As spring arrives and the water gets nearer to 70 spawning activity increases. I keep mine in a bare tank. Usually a 20 long. The surface is completely covered with hornwort. I keep yarn mops on the bottom so the females can take cover from the male. I have found an egg or two in the yarn mops on rare occasions. The male will establish a territory in the floating hornwort. He will coerce females into it to spawn. Using a flashlight you will be able to see the eggs attached to the hornwort in the male's territory. When I see a bunch of eggs I remove that entire section of hornwort to a sterlite container to hatch. Eggs hatch fast. Usually within 7 days. Free swimmers will immediately consume live baby brine shrimp. Fry growth is steady but not rapid. Sex ratio is about even. The fish you are bidding on are probably a month or so from sexing-out. I feed mine Tetramin flake, frozen brine shrimp, frozen bloodworms and live black worms. Live food is not critical to spawning success but it helps. Again, these are not a tropical fish(they will survive under ice). They tend to waste away at tropical temps. I do not recommend trying to keep them in a community type setting. I do recommend trying them. They are hardy and long lived. Adult males are stunning. I'm sure other hobbyists that have worked with these have had success using other methods, but this is how I do it. Shipping is $15 non-refundable on top of the winning bid. These fish will ship Wednesday 8/7 so payment is due Tuesday 8/6. If payment is not received as requested, I will relist the auction. Thanks for looking.
