Description

Up for auction are 5 young (about 3/8 to half an inch, some larger) Aphanius danfordii! Starting at $1 and absolutely no reserve! More are possibly available at auction closing price at my discretion. Check out the pictures of my breeding group below. This species has attractive males (ones with stripes) AND females (ones with spots)! This Aphanius species is my currently favorite Aphanius. Fish of the genus Aphanius are basically "cousins" of our native pupfish of the genus Cyprinodon (like the Desert Pupfish Cyprinodon macularius). They are basically the pupfish of the old world (Europe, Asia, Africa). Many Aphanius spp. come from similar habitats as Cyprinodon species and have similar breeding habits. Aphanius danfordii is endemic to Turkey and inhabits a great variety of freshwater habitats in Turkey's central highlands, where the weather can be hot and dry in the summer (i.e. desert like heat) and freezing cold (snow and ice) in the winter. They occur in ponds, lakes creeks and rivers under a variety of water conditions.

Accordingly, just like many other Aphanius spp., A. danfordii is quite very cold hardy. In fact, A. danfordii may be the one of the most cold hardy species of the Aphanius genus. This fish can be kept outside even if your pond freezes over (as long as your pond does not become a solid block of ice of course). You can keep this fish outside pretty much anywhere where you can keep goldfish and koi outside, too. At the same time they can take summer heat to over 90 degrees fahrenheit. I keep my fish inside in tanks year round and they do great under normal tropical conditions. I plan on putting some outside at some point. These are the most peaceful Aphanius I have ever encountered. I have several males in the same tank and there is not a single shredded fin or relentless chasing, something that would be unimaginable with the much more aggressive Aphanius mento. Hence, A. danfordii can be kept in community tanks without a problem.
