Description

Russian Red Cherry Shrimp You are bidding on twenty (20 juvenile Russian Red Cherry Shrimp - Neocaridina heteropoda, also known as Neocaridina denticulata sinensis, and CRS. They are a species of fresh water shrimp that are easily raised and bred since they are of the more highly developed species that has live young and never require a period in salt water. Ghost shrimp, amano shrimp, and many others have a larval state that needs to be developed in salt water -- these guys don't require that stage. Cherry shrimps were discovered on Taiwan. There�s quite a large exotic fish industry on that island, and they started cranking them out in mass quantities in 2002. Pictured at the left are adults and the juveniles we are offering. The juveniles are about 1/2 inch in length and will grow quickly to the size of the adults shown. Note the dime in the bottom of the bowl for size comparisons. They do not get larger than this for us. The adults are available from us -- email Rhonda and ask her for the current price. In the wild its colours vary tremendously according to the nature of its habitat, and you will find green, ginger, brown and almost black sub-species. Strains have been produced by line breeding from these that include the Crystal Red Shrimp -- but these are for more advanced hobbyists. Those colors are available but they are much more expensive than these beginner shrimp -- but get some success with these guys and move up to the prime stuff. We call them 'Russian Red' because it is the name we use for 'red' items we sell and not for the reason our daphnia and red-wrigglers are deep red (due to an extremely well developed hemoglobin system that allows them to exist in water very low in oxygen). A trivia note here: all shrimp are redish orange when newly deceased -- the cherry shrimp females are always pretty red even when alive -- the males are smaller and less colorful. The eggs start out in a yellow saddle visible on the females back and eventually move down onto the inner tail surface and turn green. Our strain has been outcrossed with two other local strains to produce a less inbred -- but still red -- strain. We currently raise them in a 100 gallon tub in our greenhouse which is filled with guppy grass and an airline with a bunch of mystery snails and pond snails and with an aquarium heater set at about 75F. We put some of the guppy grass in the bag for them to hang on to during the trip -- at no extra charge. We have java moss available or mystery snails for an extra charge if you would prefer the high-dollar, slow growing stuff. The mystery snails have been a kind of canary-in-the-coalmine indicator for me and they will die well before the shrimp if the water becomes foul. As indicated in some of the linked articles, plants growing under good lighting produce a kind of substrate for micro-organisms and algae which the shrimp eat as well as the crushed HBH basic flake food we feed every day. For non-alive-arrival claims a picture of the fish in the unopened bag within 72 hours is required (remember that the guarantee is for Express mail, FedX next day or air cargo only). None of the shipping companies has meaningful insurance -- only the shipping cost will be reimbursed on a successful claim -- if you try to push the issue the likely result will be that they will flag your destination area to not receive shipped animals. Most people want Priority Mail which is not guaranteed for live arrival or for a delivery time but is usually successful without heat packs for fish when your local temperatures remain between 60F and 90F for 72 hours after the date we agree to mail them -- so pay attention to your local weather. . Air cargo is typically $70 for the first 100# -- about 3 large boxes -- fish and shipping must be pre-paid. We also have a jobber list of our fish at even lower prices but in larger quantities. We are mostly a hatchery and grow-out operation but we have access to a 30+ page list of fish we can order -- we recently had 200 bettas dropshipped to NY for a fund-raiser for example.
