Triops longicaudatus Information

Triops longicaudatus, or the American Tadpole/Shield Shrimp, is a very interesting creature. Short lived, these animals eat anything, including each other, to grow fast and reproduce quickly.
They are often found in temporary waters, such as Arizona's desert pools where mine come from, that are only filled a few months of the year, or every few years.
The seasonal rains fill the dry lake beds and the eggs hatch! The eggs can wait years for water, some lab kept ones are still viable after 80 years!
The secret to the survival of this ancient invertebrate is diapause, a type of suspended animation.
After hatching, the young eat as much as they can and grow as fast as they can, even eating smaller sisters to this mean. All my Triops are female, and reproduce copies of themselves.
Adults live about 60-90 days, oldest recorded lived to be 100 days, while mine make it on average 83 days.
(more information can be obtained either from me or from a google search)
