Cambarellus shufedtii, aka Dwarf Cajun Cray

This auction is for two pairs of young adult mottled Cambarellus shufeldtii. Most of my crays always show at least a little blue and you can expect that at least some of what you will receive will show blue. Let's say I will make sure at least one M & F pair will show blue. With BIN or if bidding goes over $30, I will make sure ALL FOUR show blue. I have never seen mine change back and forth from brown to blue. Not saying it can't happen... just that I have not seen it. These guy live on my desk, I see them all the time.

These crays are sexed by the tails, NOT the claws. I don't know where that idea came from. I have gotten the best result by keeping nearly equal numbers of males and females. These are young but definitely old enough to breed, A couple of females were berried last month and I will probably find a whole mess of babies when I catch the crays for this auction. Right now they are roughly an inch in size, IME they don't get much bigger than 1.25", I have never had one over 1.5".

Last month I took the tank they call home completely apart to clean it in preparation for the spring babies and discovered I had more than the dozen or so adult crays which I feel can live together comfortably. It's not likely I will be offering pairs of young adults again this year, no side deals. If you want them now is the time to bid.

If you just want these mini crays for pets they can live with small fish just fine. If you want to breed them, devote a tank to just these crays. The babies are tiny like shrimplets (craylets?). A five gallon might work if there were a ton of hiding spots, a 10G (or bigger) is better. Sponge filters are best, box filters okay, HOTBs will suck up babies unless you prefilter the intake. No heater is needed but they probably won't breed much under 70F. Keep temp under 80F. I keep them in medium hard water with both pieces of barnacles and limestone fossil rocks. They don't seem to do well in soft water, pH matters less. One alternative for hiding spots is to just cut up some PVC into rings and put a couple of layers in like in the picture below. Those are last year's babies with 1" thin wall PVC rings. The other pictures above I took 4/22/10.
