Description

Coptodon kottae is part of the CARES program. This is an endangered species of cichlid endemic to Lake Barombi-ba-Kotto and Lake Mboandong in the Southwest Region of Cameroon, [West] Africa. They are a substrate-brooding, benthopelagic fish with a max length of 15cm. Threats to the species include sedimentation, pollution, and deoxygenation caused by slash-and-burn agriculture and oil plantations. I have raised these fish in my local water; pH around 8, high hardness. The adults at a temperature of 77/78 degrees F and the fry around 80/81 degrees F. They are quite herbivorous and I try to pull as much duckweed, plants, and algae from other tanks to feed them. The fry take to Hikari First Bites and Aquarium Co-Op Easy Fry Food just fine. Im sure any powdered food would work. Adults pair off and make a nest in the sand/gravel. Both parents guard the eggs and fry, moving any stray fry back into the pack with their mouths. I usually remove fry within the first 48 hours to reduce aggression and encourage further breeding. They love smashed up terracotta pots and other decorations. They will re-aquascape your tank regularly. I am selling 10 adolescent fish. They are an endangered species so I am only trying to recoup overhead costs (heating, food, water, breather bags, heat packs, shipping materials, etc.) I price at $1.50/each. Buyer pays shipping. I ship in insulated Styrofoam coolers with breather bags and heat packs. Overnight Shipping is encouraged. I can use a specific shipping service if need be. This is an awesome fish that is unfortunately both moving towards extinction and not in our hobby. Help preserve and pass this species on.
