This auction lot: Species: Haplochromis riponianus Common name: None
Quantity: 5 juveniles
Size of fish offered: to 1
Adult size they will reach: Females about 4, males about 5
Sex of fish offered: mixed
Source/pedigree: Several generations from wild
More available at winning bid price: Yes
Care/feeding notes: A fairly uncommon Lake Victoria cichlid, males are extremely colorful. They have also been called Psammochromis riponianus in the trade, but many scientists dont yet recognize that name, so Im still using the catchall Haplochromis as the CAL Academy of Sciences does. They are found over sandy areas near rocky outcrops in the Lake, and do well with a pile of rocks along the back (Mbuna style) but with plenty of open room over a sandy bottom. They are primarily carnivores and eat snails, bloodworms, and meaty frozen foods along with flakes and pellets. These youngsters are feeding on newly hatched brine shrimp, frozen bloodworms, flake and pellet foods.
