Altolamprologus calvus "Chaitika" White from Lake Tanganyika Up for sale are some Altolamprologus calvus "Chaitika" White originally from Lake Tanganyika raised by me in my tanks in my home in Eastern Oklahoma. These are about 1 to 1.5 in length and about 9 months to 1 year old. Calvus are slower growing than most aquarium fish but the rewards are worth the effort. They have several different (some might even say odd) habits. As adults, they feed by sticking their 'nose' between the cracks in rocks and by using their large mouths, "inhale" small fish/fry hiding there. As fry, instinct tells them to hide between the bits of gravel on the bottom of the lake for protection, so in our tanks, that makes them somewhat more susceptible to infection from bacteria that clusters on the bottom of tanks. I've had good luck using old fashioned undergravel filters and crushed coral gravel. This not only buffers the water ph and hardness (to be more like their lake in Africa) but also provides a cleaner bottom for them as they hide. I also leave them in the cave with the mother as long as possible (separated in a 'hang-on' breeder). I have already done all the hard work of getting them old enough to be easier to grow up in your tank. The sooner that they rise up to feed or even feel safe enough to freely swim in the water column, the better chance you'll have in growing them up. They are already doing this here, but might hide for the first week in your tank. I have way more that I need for my breeding program, so I'll sell them with a Buy It Now at $15.00 each. You can buy as many as you want (assuming I have that many, just ask me!) and I'll include some FREE 'extras' at no charge (just in case issues arise in shipping, I strive for zero losses and issues are very rare). Selection will be by the 'scoop of the net' method, but I'll make sure that the selected fish meet my quality standards (such as having correct fins and no obvious defects.)� I use custom cut extruded foam insulation, triple bagged, pure Oxygen, Heat Packs as needed, and moisture absorbent to meet USPS regulations. Payment is required by Saturday night for shipping on the following Tuesday but in NO case should it take over a week to complete your payment.
