Care: Bristlenoses are relatively undemanding fish. A well planted aquarium with plenty of hiding spaces makes for a comfortable pleco. Temperature: 73-80F / 23-27C pH: Does Not Matter Common Name(s): Bristlenose pleco, Bristlenose catfish, Bushynose plecostomus Scientific Name(s): Ancistrus sp. Origin: Amazon River, South America Size: 4 -6 Inches Feeding: Like most plecos, the Bristlenose is mostly a herbivore feeding on mostly algae and vegetable matter. However, Bristlenoses will readily eat meaty foods as well. Algae wafers, zucchini, cucumber, lettuce, green beans, peas, sinking pellets, and frozen bloodworms are good foods to feed. Feeding a varied diet is the key to a happy, healthy fish. Natural Habitat: Found in the rivers and floodplains of the Amazon region, this fish prefers acidic, warm water. Bristlenose plecos have adapted to live in caves and crevices on the bottom of their river or stream. These caves act as spawning sites and areas to retreat to in case of a predator. Diseases: This genus is not known for being prone to diseases. Keep the aquarium clean and your Bristlenose should live a long, healthy life. NOTICE: We DO NOT ship in a Styrofoam lined boxes any longer. WE FEEL THAT cellulose insulation IS A BETTER INSULATING MEDIUM. Consider This: Foam only has a "R" Value of 3.5 On the other hand a 7inch box full of cellulose insulation renders an "R" value of 18. That is higher than many of the walls of homes. WE ADD HEAT PACKS WHEN NEEDED. In extra hot or cold weather we may suggest to have you pick up the fish from the post office. This is up to you, but it is always a better idea than leaving a fish to be knocked around for 6 hours by a post man in the heat or cold. We use 100% pure oxygen to pack the fish.
