Description

You are bidding on 2 (two) amazing females of wild caught Betta dimidiata Sungai Kapuas, originated from one of the streams in the Kapuas River basin, West Kalimantan (Indonesian: Kalimantan Barat), Indonesia. This species is incredibly rare in the hobby and usually commands a high price as a result.

This species typically inhabits forest swamp streams and pools, some of which have been measured at just a few centimetres deep. These are usually shaded from the sun; the dense canopy of branches above meaning very little light penetrates the water surface. Marginal vegetation also tends to grow thickly. The water itself is typically stained with humic acids and other chemicals released by decaying organic material. The dissolved mineral content is negligible, the pH quite low and the substrate composed mainly of fallen leaves, branches and submerged tree roots.

Dont trust to those saying this species is difficult to breed, not at all, very easy instead! The water conditions are not critical; Betta dimidiata is very tolerant of water chemistry and thrives in almost any type of water as long as it is clean and well filtered. I breed them in Glasgow tap water adding about 30 40 dry oak leaves in a 20-litre tank, very slow running small sponge filter and nothing else. For breeding purposes the aquarium size can be as small as 20-litre for a pair (1 male and 1 female). These are dwarf beauties. The males have fantastic colours when breeding. They show a brilliant band in the anal and tail fins. Their body shape considerably differs from other species in the genus. They eat everything you give them, from live and frozen food to dry flakes and pellets.

Betta dimidiata is very peaceful species. You can keep a large group of them in a big tank without any problems. I have never seen fighting males or females, maximum what they can do is to show to each other. They become tame very quickly. At the feeding time you would see all of them waiting for you at the feeding corner of the tank. The fish is not shy; instead, they are very active and inquisitive.
