Description

I first heard of this fish years ago when Mark Denaro described it to me as his "Holy Grail' fish. Apparently these guys had been in the hobby a long, long time ago and had been absent for almost as long a time. I kept asking Mark for a few years if they were on the import list and the answer was always no. But about four years ago that answer changed and I quickly ponied up the loot for this fish and have been overjoyed since. I am pleased to see that after my initial breeding of the roundtail paradise fish there has been a few dedicated individuals committed to these animals and they seem to be hopefully here to stay for a while. One thing on their husbandry-they are easy-peasy in most regards but you must realize this is a cold water fish. They can survive very warm conditions in the summer but for their long time well being they should have a cooling off period in the winter. The juvies in this auction can go through this winter warm and growing but next and future winters should include a hibernation. Now when I first heard about them I did as much research as I could but really found little info. It was said they could survive under skim ice. Well.........anyone in the Northeast knows what conditions we had here last winter. I had left about 8 adult pairs outside in my backyard pond as an experiment. Normally we have fairly mild winters here in zone 7 Long Island but we had a record breaking arctic experience that I never want to repeat. My 28 inch deep pond had 6 inches of ice and I didn't think anything would survive. Come April I was out cleaning up and I saw movement in the pond. They had survived! All of them, and they were thriving. So I am guessing that these guys might survive outside down to zone 5 which includes a lot of the northern US. Needless to say releasing them outside into native waters is not recommended! Express shipping is 40 and guarantee extends to shipping. Who does that? Me, and so should everybody. Priority is not guaranteed but is a good bet-these guys are effing hardy and I know how to ship fish. best, jeffbollbach
