Description

Live Microworm starter culture - 3oz

3oz volume of wet oatmeal teeming with live Microworms.

Microworms are an excellent live food for fish fry and small fish. They are tiny nematode worms ranging in size from 1-3 mm in length and roughly 50-100 microns in diameter.
They can live submerged in water for 8 to 12 hours. My worms are cultured in cooked oatmeal with yeast. You will receive 3 ounces of mature culture to use as a starter for your own cultures.

Culturing:
1) use a small round plastic or glass container with lid, such as a cleaned whip cream, sour cream, or butter tub.
punch 3 or 4 quarter inch holes in the lid and plug them with sponge or filter floss (to let some air in but keep bugs out)
add about one inch of instant oatmeal and enough water to just float the oatmeal. (you can use instant potatoes, baby cereal, or any starchy wet food, I find oatmeal to have the least unpleasant smell).
2) microwave for one minute (to sterilize the oatmeal and container, and cook the oatmeal).
the oatmeal should be soft like jelly, but not liquid. Drain water if too runny or add more water if too firm.
allow to cool to room temperature.
3) sprinkle in enough yeast to lightly coat the surface of the oatmeal and add 1-2 tsp of (still good) old culture or starter.
put the lid on it, set it on a shelf that isnt in the sun, and allow it to grow for 1 week before starting to harvest.

DONE!) after a few weeks you may need to stir the culture and add a bit more water. at 4-5 weeks use it to start a new culture and discard the old one.
I recommend you keep at least 2 cultures always going, to provide a backup if one goes bad (flies, mold, etc).

Harvesting:
you can harvest every day if you need to. Even multiple times per day.
when the culture matures the worms will crawl up the side of the container.
Harvest them by gently swabbing them off the side wall of the container (use your finger, a small spatula, etc) and then rinse the harvested worms off into your fish tanks.

All livestock has been bred and raised in my fish room. No fresh imports, and none of the "bonus" pests and diseases that come with fresh imports.
