Description

Grindal worms are a small white non parasitic worm. They are closely related to the red earthworm. Grindal worms usually grow to approximately 10 mm in length, which are a bit smaller than white worms. This makes them an excellent food choice for larger fry, juveniles, and adult fish. Grindal worms hold a nutritional value of about 70% protein and 14% fat. They can make a highly desirable addition to your fish's diet. These worms will produce a cocoon that contains anywhere from 20 to 25 eggs. These eggs will hatch in about 12 days. Reproduction is best at 70-75 degrees F. Newly produced grindal worms will start to reproduce at about 20 days old. As with most live cultures, there are different methods to culturing grindal worms. I culture my grindal worms in a 100% organic potting soil medium. I also take great care not to cross contaminate different culture species by using species specific tools, containers, and mediums. These techniques are what work best for me. Grindal Worm Culturing Instructions There are a few different ways to culture grindal worms. Below you will find culturing instructions based on how I culture my worms. This process is what works for me. Materials Needed: Plastic opaque container AND lid (The container that your culture is shipped in is not intended to be a permanent home for your worms. You will need a non-transparent, shoe box size container) Organic potting soil (it is important to use organic potting soil so that you do not poison your culture or fish with additives from the soil) Water (do not use water that contains chlorine, I use bottled spring water that is from a natural source) A piece of plastic or glass ( I remove and use the glass from an old 5x7 picture frame) Dog food kibbles, cat food kibbles, bread, rice flour, or cooked pasta (I use puppy food kibbles and kitten food kibbles) Grindal worm starter culture Instructions: Preheat your oven to 350℉. Pour a fairly decent amount of the potting soil into an oven safe dish. Bake for 20 minutes. This kills any harmful things that may be living in the soil. Carefully remove from oven and let the soil cool to room temperature. DO NOT add your worms if the soil is not completely cool. After cooling, pour 2-3 inches of soil into your container. Add a small amount of water to the soil to moisten it. The soil should be wet enough to stick together when squeezing it.(If water drips from the soil, when you do this, it is too moist) Add your grindal worm to the container. You do not have to place dirt over the worms or stir the culture around. Just give the container a few taps to slightly spread the culture around. Place a couple pieces of moistened kibble in the middle of your culture. Replace food as it is eaten. Immediately remove any molded foods. (There are many different foods that are appropriate for feeding grindal worms. Again, this is what works best for me.) Use the glass or cd case to cover both the kibble and the culture. Now comes the most IMPORTANT step Poke small holes in the lid. Grindal worms need oxygen to survive!! You can lightly stuff the holes with cotton to prevent bugs for entering the container. Place the container in a spot that stays room temperature. Grindal worms are best kept between 70-75 F. Cultures will stop producing and die off if temperatures are not tolerable. (I store my cultures in my house all year round) Periodically mist the top of the medium bed with spring water to keep it from drying out. (DO NOT over saturate) Harvesting You should be able to harvest your worms within 3-5 weeks. This should allow ample time for the culture to fully establish. When harvesting, simply, lift the glass. Then use an old credit card, tweezers, paint brush, or your finger to remove some of the worms from the glass. Place them into the aquarium being cautious not to get any of the soil in your tank. Reculturing can be done every 2 months or when your culture outgrows the container size. Shipping cost is with USPS priority mail at a cost of $8. Payments are accepted through Stripe invoicing. SHIPPING POLICY I ship Monday through Wednesday only. This helps prevent loss of life due to weekend delays. I strongly urge all customers to keep a close eye on tracking using USPS tracking service. It is important that you are able to receive your package as soon as it is delivered as some species of fish and feeder cultures are very sensitive to extreme hot and cold temperatures. In most cases, I use USPS Priority Mail but some items do ship USPS First Class. Overnight mail is available upon request. After your package leaves my hands I cannot be responsible for late, delayed, damaged, lost, or stolen packages. I ship to the US only. I reserve the right to hold shipping if I feel that the weather is not within reasonable conditions. I will NOT risk the health of my stock. HOLIDAY SHIPPING POLICY I do NOT ship during holidays. If I feel that your order will not arrive without delay, I will hold shipping until the following week. I know this may be of some inconvenience but I want to make sure everyone gets a healthy package. RETURN/DOA POLICY Due to the nature of my products, I do not accept returns. If in the rare event that your culture or fish arrive dead you must send me 2 photos within 2 hours of delivery time. I will do my best to resolve any issues that you may have. **I do not guarantee live arrivals on fish that are NOT shipped express (overnight) mail.** If you have purchased a worm culture that you think may have perished during transit, do NOT throw the substrate away. It will contain viable eggs that will hatch. Instead feed and seed the culture as normal. I cannot be responsible for cultures or fish after the allotted delivery time as I cannot control how well you care for them or how long they set exposed to temperatures in mailboxes. Please note: If a replacement order of fish or a culture is needed buyer must pay for shipping. All orders will only be replaced once. If replacement attempt fails, buyer will be given a store credit for the originally ordered product excluding any shipping charges. Buyer must send email and 2 photos to: willyoueatworms@gmail.com within the same 2 hour allotted delivery time before any credit is applied.
