AUCTION:

100 Russian red strain from unheated 20 gallon tubs. This is a very large daphnia and about the size of a small pea.

Being these ship USPS Priority mail I send a lot more water. This is important, because when they show up, the water is still healthy/stable, and helps seed your cultures with beneficial bacteria from my culture - something important to daphnia culturing. If I were to ship First Class, they would ship in far less water, which pollutes it, and kills off those beneficial bacteria. This will show up with water healthy enough, if you remove most of the daphnia from it, you can keep it as a culture for a couple weeks - as I fed it prior to shipping.

FYI: I can include additional daphnia, upon request, at no cost, as I don't overpack them. However, unless you are stocking a pond that has predators in it, you only need a couple daphnia per gallon, at most, to get started. Adding extra daphnia, diminishes the seeding capability of the water, and causes them to do an increasingly amount of damage to themselves because of their spike. So - if you want me to include additional daphnia, I can, but I don't recommend it.

Important Culturing Aspects:

Keep in mind there are hundreds of species of daphnia, and few people truly know what exact species they have. Many strains, even when labeled with the same name, can be significantly different. For best results its best to match up water chemistry and culturing method. Below are some details I feel are important for a successful start.

Water: My water is middle of the road in hardness and pH.

Temperature: My outdoor cultures are unheated.

Feeding: I feed primarily fish tank mulm, cucumber, and banana peel.

GUARANTEE:

If DOA I will send a replacement at no cost.

The time a package is vulnerable is when your mail carrier has it. If the package is exposed to the elements it's likely to perish. It's critical the box not be left in your mailbox, so have somebody home that is prepared to greet your mail carrier.
