AUCTION
100 daphnia from my indoor(unheated garage) culture. They are medium-large size daphnia, and cultured under fluorescent light @ 6500 kelvin. Shipped priority mail(2-3 day) in a 1 liter soda bottle.

I feed the bottle/culture prior to shipping. Being it's been fed, if you conserve most of the water, daphnia will survive for several weeks in the bottle. Yes - you can set this on a shelf and it will remain a small colony of daphnia, happily eating the decaying matter I added. You can use these in case you lose your initial cultures.

HOW TO START A CULTURE

The goal is to establish a colony in your water. When introduced into new water, it's common for a total crash - killing every daphnia. Once you have daphnia established in your water they are much more resilient. I recommenend, in addition to your main culture, you start a few tiny cultures. The reason is, if your primary doesn't take, one of the small cultures should.

Steps:

1) There are hundreds of species of freshwater daphnia, and few truly know what exact species they have. Not all daphnia are the same. For best results, start with a daphnia strain that is cultured in similar water, and cultured using similar techniques you will use.

2) For an even better outcome create several gallon sized cultures. Gallon milk jugs with the top cut off work great. In each culture use water from a different aquarium. The goal in all this is to establish a colony in your water. If you try water from different sources one should take. Don't place all your eggs(daphnia) into one basket(culture).

In each culture add a handful of natural gravel and small piece of driftwood. There is no need to aerate, but if you do, keep the bubbling to a minimum.

3) Add a dose of food to your new culture; allow them to build up some organics in the water colum. Try aquarium mulm, banana peel, cucumber, green water, etc.

Be careful of overfeeding. One of the most common errors culturing indoors is overfeeding. For a one gallon culture, a teaspoon of mulm, and a banana peel the size of a stamp, is a plenty to start with. Consider, you can never underfeed your culture. If underfed it will only contain fewer daphnia, but if you overfeed, you greatly increase your odds of a total crash.

Daphnia obtains food from things like banana peel as it leeches its nutrients into the water, and on bacteria as it slowly decays. Lightly feed daphnia and allow older foods to decay some.

4) Allow your cultures to cycle for a week or two prior to adding daphnia. If using tap water age the water for several weeks prior to using.

5) If you save this culture it will survive for several weeks. If keeping this culture remove a few shot glasses of water. Pour the rest of the bottle, through a fine net, into a bowl. Add the daphnia you captured into the shot glasses of water. Transition those to their new cultures.

Then take this bottle and place it on a shelf. I fed the culture prior to shipping - so it will support a small colony of daphnia for a couple weeks. The few daphnia that escaped your net will quickly repopulate the little culture.

FYI: Another common error, when starting an indoor culture, is starting with too many daphnia. Add 3-6 daphnia per gallon of culture. If you add more, you risk too many adults, having too many babies, that are too similar in size - causing feeding issues soon after starting the culture.
