Description

I list several food culture versions, including white worms, daphnia pulex, daphnia magna, microfex, copepods, and springtails. Every auction is guaranteed to arrive alive one time, with a free replacement sent. I pride myself in having great culture strains.

I have cultured most everything over the years. The two cultures every serious aquarist should culture are daphnia and white worms. You may find content that discusses these cultures as being a challenge, but that is because serious aquarists value them, and all topics are thoroughly discussed. Of all the things I have cultured, these two offer the greatest yields with minimal effort. You can also co-culture a few other things along with them.

Auction:
You are bidding on a medium USPS priority box filled with:
1) A box filled with established culture medium - the same size as a USPS small shipping box. The medium is taken from around a worm mass, and will be full of adults, eggs, and juveniles for an instant start.
2) The remainder of the medium box is filled with new medium for future cultures. The new medium is the exact stuff I use. It is primarily coco fiber I treat to be worm friendly. It will be enough for several shoebox sized containers.

DOA:
I will replace a DOA box once at no charge.

Culturing White Worms: :
Medium: Culture in peat moss, coco fiber, and soils. The medium I use is a specific brand of coconut fiber I personally treat/soften. Depth can be as little as 1/4". Keep very moist.

Food: Bread, cereals, vegetables, potato, rice. They feed on the same things as a composting worm.

Temperature: Anywhere in the 60's is good. The culture can go above its ideal temperature and the worms will be fine. At night temperatures will get low enough for reproduction. I moderate my culture temperatures simply by moving them close to the floor in the summer, and higher on a shelf in the winter. If you live in a very hot environment, in the hottest months, you can place a fan blowing across your culture. You can also culture them in a cooler, and each day or two add a frozen water bottle.

Harvesting: The worms gather around their food in thick masses. I scoop out a piece of that with a fork. You can also place a piece of plastic over their food, and the worms will crawl on the bottom of it to feed.

Mites: I find the best solution for pests is to maintain healthy worms. I have things come and go in my cultures, and have never once in decades of culturing white worms, had anything close to a problem that impacted harvests. Many of them, even things that look like mites, may actually be feeding on the culture food, dead worms, worm castings, etc. It's impossible to keep wild critters out of your cultures without time consuming efforts; keep your worms healthy and you won't have to concern yourself with mites.

If you do wish a more sterile culture, remove a gob of worms, and place in water. White worms are semi aquatic, and will live underwater for close to one week. Let them sit in water until everything else is dead. Rinse a couple times and add to your sterilized culture.
